In the opening frame, Mayo got the scoring started with a lay-in. The Johnnies were hot early after back-to-back triples from Jailah Donald and a second chance trey from Dwyer in the corner gave the Red Storm a 10-3 lead to start the game. The Golden Eagles turned the tides finishing the quarter on a 13-2 spurt to take a four-point edge, 16-12, into the second frame.
As the game turned to the second stanza, Marquette continued its dominant run to 17-2 stretching its lead to eight, before a Donald step back two-point jumper half the run. The Golden Eagles stretched their lead to as many as 15 with 3:29 to play in opening half. Janeya Grant nailed a triple off a curl from beyond-the-arc and made a pair from the charity stripe to record the final five first half points for the Johnnies, as they trimmed the deficit to 10, 32-22, heading into the locker room.
The third quarter crawled out to a slow start offensively with neither side scoring for the opening four minutes of the stanza. Bahati got it started with a second chance putback. As the Red Storm kept inching closer and closer Mayo made a pivotal 3-pointer off a feed from Dwyer to make it a one possession contest, 37-35, with 1:55 to play in the frame. Mayo finished the cup to make it a two-point game, 41-39, as Marquette hung onto its lead heading into the fourth.
In a tightly contested final frame, Phoenix Gedeon tied it out the gate, the first of three ties in the fourth quarter. Dwyer knotted the scoreline at 44 after draining a triple from long-range. Another Bahati tip-in served as the last tie at the 7:24 mark. The Golden Eagles then took the lead but never went ahead further than five points until the final two minutes. A corner triple from Marquette's Olivia Porter brought the cushion to six for the home team, 57-51, with 1:42 on the clock.
In the final minute with the Golden Eagles in front by five after a made free throw by Kylie Lavelle, Mayo found Donald in the corner, as she cashed in on a huge triple to pull the Red Storm with two, 57-55, with 0:45 to play. The Red Storm clamped down defensively and tracked down the board to give itself a chance on the final possession. Mayo drove to the basket weaving her way to a look at the game-tying lay-in that bounced off the mark as time expired.
The Red Storm will have the weekend off before returning to action on Wednesday Feb. 12 when it meets No. 5/6 UConn at Gampel Pavilion at 7:30 p.m. on SNY.
