St. John’s Heads to No. 7/7 UConn on Wednesday

QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's basketball team will battle No. 7/7 UConn inside Gampel Pavilion on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. in Storrs, Conn.
Wednesday's conference contest will be televised on SNY with Allen Bestwick and Meghan Culmo on the call with Chelsea Sherrod as the sideline reporter from Gampel Pavilion. Live Stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
In its last outing, the Red Storm (13-10, 3-9 BIG EAST) fell to Marquette, 57-55, last Wednesday night at the Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee. The Red Storm clawed back from a double-digit halftime deficit, outscoring the Golden Eagles, 17-9, in the third quarter. The Johnnies' chance at the game-tying basket was just off the mark at the buzzer inside the Al McGuire Center.
Ber'Nyah Mayo fueled St. John's comeback effort last Wednesday and finished with team-highs in points (13), rebounds (6), assists (4) and steals (4). The graduate student has finished in double-digits for the eighth time in the Johnnies' last nine games.
Lashae Dwyer recorded her 18th double-figure scoring performance of the season against Marquette, logging 10 points, three steals and four rebounds.
Sophomore Julie Bahati delivered a strong performance in Milwaukee, matching career-bests with six points on 2-of-3 shooting and four rebounds. The Nairobi, Kenya product set a new career-high of three blocks and was plus-12 while on the court in her 18 minutes of action against Marquette.
The Red Storm forced the Golden Eagles into 15 turnovers and converted them into 19 points. The Johnnies posted 10 steals in the contest, marking the seventh time this season that the group registered double-digit swipes. Dwyer paces the BIG EAST with 67 steals at 2.9 per game, which ranks 14th and 17th in the nation, respectively.
The squad defended the 3-point line against Marquette at an elite level, limiting Marquette to just 26.7 percent (4-15) shooting from beyond-the-arc. On the season, the Red Storm sit third in the conference in 3-point percentage defense (30.2 percent).
In addition to its defense, St. John's nailed its three throws in Wisconsin, making 81.8 percent of its shots and marking the 15th time this season the group finished 75 percent or better from the charity stripe. The Johnnies are currently 20th in the country and second in the BIG EAST in free throw percentage, shooting 77.6 percent from the line.
St. John's and No. 7/6 UConn are slated to meet for the 69th time in the series between the two teams on Wednesday night. The Huskies hold a 50-18 all-time advantage over the Johnnies, including a 23-5 record at home in Connecticut.
In their first meeting of the season on Jan. 15, UConn took down the Red Storm, 71-45, inside Carnesecca Arena. Mayo totaled a team-high 10 points for the Red Storm in the contest. The game also marked the Huskies' first in Queens since the 2021-22 season.
The Johnnies last took down UConn on Feb. 21, 2023, in Hartford, 69-64. Current Director of Women's Basketball Operations Danielle Patterson and Kadaja Bailey each finished with 20 points during the historic victory at the XL Center.

Bueckers sits third in the conference with 18.7 points per game on 52.1 percent field goal shooting and 41.5 percent shooting from long-range. Sarah Strong has put together an impressive freshman season, logging 16.7 points per contest with a team-leading 7.9 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game.
