Jayder Raifstanger, Luke Orbon and Jackson Tucker each tallied three RBIs
Jayder Raifstanger had a career day at the plate, setting new bests of three RBIs and two doubles. The sophomore has now extended his on-base streak to eight games, reaching safely in every contest so far this season.
Will Cowan continued to impress, racking up a season-high three hits, including a double and a triple, falling just a home run short of the cycle with an RBI and a run.
Jackson Tucker matched his career-high of three RBIs and three runs scored, while stealing home in the ninth. Luke Orbon batted in three runs as well, all coming off an eighth-inning triple, to go along with two walks.
Anthony Brienza scored three runs, reaching base three times on a single and two free passes. Jon LeGrande tallied a pair of runs, a hit and a walk, while Jared Beebe logged a pair of hits and walk in the contest.
Chad Falcon picked up the first win of his career after coming on in relief and tossing a personal-best three complete innings of work on Saturday afternoon. The two-way player also scored a run and worked a walk against the Cardinals.
Louisville opened the scoring in the first inning after Matt Klein hit an RBI single into right field, bringing Lucas Moore home from second. Starting pitcher David Rodriguez was able to escape the inning with no more damage done, getting a Cardinal to pop up and end the inning.
The Johnnies put up a two-spot in the top of the third frame to take the lead. LeGrande led off the inning, singling into right-center field and moving to third after Brienza whacked a base hit through the right side. One out later, LeGrande went home on a groundout to knot the score just before Raifstanger worked a six-pitch walk that put runners on first and second. Beebe then smacked an infield single, that was followed by a Louisville defensive miscue, allowing Brienza to make his way home from second base, giving the Red Storm a 2-1 lead.
The Cardinals tied things in the home half of the third. Zion Rose tripled ahead of a Klein single, bringing him home and evening the score at 2-2.
The Johnnies threatened in the fourth as Cowan lined his first collegiate triple into right-center. However, Louisville's Parker Detmers was able to generate consecutive outs off a fielder's choice and a caught stealing to retire the side.
Following a pitcher duel between Rodriguez and Detmers in the fourth and fifth innings, Beebe doubled down the left field line in the top of the sixth and moved to third on a groundout, but Detmers settled back in and produced the outs needed to flip the frame.
The Cardinals retook the lead in the sixth, using a two-out Alex Alicea RBI base knock to bring a runner home from third and go ahead, 3-2.
The Red Storm tacked on two runs in the seventh frame to recapture the lead. LeGrande was plucked and then advanced to third on a ground out and a wild pitch. Tucker was able to bring LeGrande home on a bunt, as the speedy outfielder outran the throw and dove for the plate. Tucker advanced to second base and was brought home on a clutch RBI single from Raifstanger, giving the Johnnies a 4-3 lead.
Louisville immediately capitalized on a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the seventh with a Bayram Hot two-run single, grabbing a one-run lead, 5-4.
St. John's erupted for six runs in the away side of the eighth inning. Adam Agresti and Falcon gave St. John's a pair of runners from a single and a walk, respectively. Cowan continued his productive outing in Kentucky, lining an RBI double down the right field line that brought Agresti home to tie the game. Brienza walked just before Orbon mashed a three-run triple, scoring him, Falcon and Cowan. Tucker joined in on the fun, smacking an RBI single of his own into left field. After Tucker worked his way to third base from a Raiftstanger double and a Beebe walk, he capped off the inning by scoring on a wild pitch, giving the Red Storm a 10-5 advantage late in the ball game.
The Cardinals added a score in the eighth off an RBI base hit to trail, 10-6, but the Johnnies tacked on three more in the top of the ninth as Raiftstanger smashed a two-run double down the left field line and Tucker stole home, pushing St. John's advantage to 13-6.
Louisville tacked on one more run in the ninth, but it wouldn't be enough to cut down its deficit, as St. John's took the game, 13-7.
The Red Storm will finish off its weekend series with Louisville tomorrow at Jim Patterson Stadium. First pitch on Sunday from Louisville, Ky., is set for 1 p.m.
