Will Cowan hit a home run in the eighth inning
STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team (3-11) fell short against Stony Brook (7-7), 5-3, on Tuesday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field in Stony Brook, N.Y.
Adam Agresti went 2-for-3 at the plate in the Red Storm's midweek contest, tallying a double, a walk and a run scored. Will Cowan crushed his second home run of the year in the eighth inning against the Seawolves. Jackson Tucker and Anthony Brienza each rang up a double and batted in a run on Long Island.
Evan Hoeckele had a solid outing in his second career start, only allowing one run and striking out three across four complete innings of work on the mound.
Stony Brook jumped in front, 1-0, in the bottom of the first. Erik Paulsen doubled into left field and was brought home by Johnny Pilla, who hit a base knock through the right side to take an early one-run lead. Hoeckele ended the side by tossing a strikeout and picking off a runner at first, flipping the game to the second frame.
The Johnnies took the lead in the away half of the second inning. After Agresti smacked a two-out double into left field, Brienza brought him in to score with his first RBI double of the season, knotting the game, 1-1. Jon LeGrande proceeded to walk just before Tucker hit an infield RBI two-bagger of his own, giving the Red Storm a 2-1 edge.
The Seawolves had two runners on base in the bottom of the third stanza. Nicholas Solorzano was hit by a pitch to start the frame ahead of a Paulsen single two outs later, putting runners on the corners. However, Hoeckele got out of the inning with no damage done, engineering a flyout to retire the side.
Hoeckele worked out of a no-out bases-loaded jam in the fourth, producing three straight fielder's choices that stopped runs from scoring, getting out of the frame to keep St. John's ahead, 2-1.
The Seawolves put up three tallies between the fifth and sixth innings, all of which came from home runs, as the home team retook the lead, 4-2.
In the front half of the seventh, Agresti worked a walk and then moved over to third base from a wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt, ahead of LeGrande getting plunked. LeGrande stole second, but Stony Brook was able to end the side with an infield popup.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Seawolves's Matthew Jackson hit a solo homer to left, increasing Stony Brook's advantage to three, 5-2.
Cowan slugged his second homer of the year, sending a 2-0 pitch into left field with two outs in the top of the eighth inning, which cut the Johnnies' deficit to two, 5-3.
After Dylan Johnson shut down the Seawolves in the bottom of the eighth inning, Agresti whacked a single into center field to start the ninth, but Stony Brook was able to earn the final three outs needed to win the game.
The Red Storm will return home this weekend to host Maine in a three-game set. The series will start on Friday at 3 p.m. at Jack Kaiser Stadium in Queens, N.Y.
