Jon LeGrande tallied five RBIs
Sean Britt and Jace Jeremiah led the way for the Red Storm, tallying three hits apiece on Tuesday afternoon. Britt registered a trio of scores and RBIs while Jeremiah batted in two runs and scored one himself.
Will Cowan registered two runs scored and an RBI with two walks and a stolen base against the Jaspers. Jon LeGrande had himself a day, totaling five RBIs on a hit and two sacrifice flies with a stolen bag.
Louis Marinaro and Chad Falcon were dominant out of the bullpen in the first of two midweek contests for the Johnnies. Marinaro picked up his first win of the season after allowing no runs or hits and tying his career-high with five strikeouts across 2.2 innings of work. Falcon only gave up one hit and did not let up a run, matching his career-high of three punchouts across 3.2 scoreless innings of relief.
In the top of the first inning, the Jaspers got on the board. After the first two batters were retired by groundouts, Aidan Taclas singled ahead of a Ryan Lordier walk, putting runners on first and second. Andreaus Lewis scored both Jaspers with a two-run double that was smacked down the right-field line, giving Manhattan an early 2-0 lead.
St. John's loaded the bases in the home half of the first from a single, a hit-by-pitch and a walk. Cowan walked in a run, cutting the deficit in half before Britt hit a two-run single through the right side, giving the Red Storm a 3-2 lead. Jeremiah proceeded to single through the left side, plating another run, while LeGrande hit a sacrifice fly, growing the home advantage to three, 5-2.
Manhattan loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the third frame. A runner came across the plate on a fielder's choice, trimming the lead down to two, 5-3, however, Marinaro came on in relief, ending the inning with a strikeout.
For the second time in three innings, the Johnnies loaded the bases on a pair of Britt and Jeremiah singles and an Anthony Brienza hit-by-pitch with one out. LeGrande then sent his second sacrifice fly of the game into center field to score Britt and grow the Red Storm's lead to three, 6-3.
St. John's rang up a five spot in the bottom of the fourth stanza. Shaun McMillan sparked a two-out rally with an infield single, in front of Cowan walk. Britt and Jeremiah picked up their third hits of the day with a pair of RBI singles, which was followed by Brienza getting plunked to juice the bases. LeGrande ended the inning with a three-run bases-clearing double, pushing the Johnnies' advantage to eight, 11-3.
Manhattan registered four tallies in the away side of the sixth. After Lordier singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch, he scored on a Hunter Sute RBI single. The second run of the frame would score on another wild pitch, ahead of a single and a hit batter that loaded the bases. Two more runs came to the plate on a single and a fielder's choice, slicing the home advantage to four, 11-7.
Falcon flew through the final 3.2 innings of the game, allowing only one hit and no runs to ensure the win for the Red Storm, 11-7.
The Red Storm will kick off a five-game road swing tomorrow when it heads to Connecticut to take on Fairfield. First pitch from Don and Chris Cook Field is set for 3 p.m.
