The Red Storm are now on a seven-game winning streak and are 19-2 in its last 21 contests
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team (21-8-1) rolled past Manhattan, 13-5, in five innings on Tuesday afternoon to wrap up its first homestand of the season at Red Storm Field.
The Johnnies are now on a seven-game winning streak and hold a record of 19-2 in their last 21 contests dating back to Feb. 16. The Red Storm tallied multiple runs in four of the five innings to take down Manhattan (3-15) in run-rule fashion.
Jess Bianco led the offense, generating three hits and three runs scored on the day, including a double and an RBI single. The lead-off hitter has been hard to keep off the basepaths this year, hitting .418 with 34 runs scored and 14 RBIs.
Starting pitcher Ana Serafinko notched her ninth victory inside the circle, allowing just one unearned run while punching out eight batters across 3.2 innings of work. The two-way standout helped her own cause today, totaling three RBIs from the dish while picking up her 11th hit of the season.
Elanna Lysiak, Natalie Casto and Madison Konopka each tallied a pair of hits and an RBI in the contest. London Jarrard finished with a pair of RBIs and a double, while Celia Macari and Melanie Santos rounded out the scoring with an RBI apiece.
After Serafinko kicked off the contest by striking out the side, the Red Storm offense struck in the bottom of the first, scoring four runs. Bianco led off the contest with an infield single to third before swiping second base. Jarrard then drilled a hard ground ball to second and an error allowed Bianco to score and Jarrard to move up to second, 1-0. Cassidy Stouffer and Lysiak reached on a fielder's choice and single to left, loading the bases with no outs. Macari and Serafinko each recorded RBIs on back-to-back fielder's choice ground balls to plate two more runs, 3-0. Casto capped the inning with an RBI single to left field, bringing home Macari, 4-0.
Inside the circle, Serafinko kept it rolling with a pair of punchouts and a weak pop-out to short, holding the Johnnies' advantage at four runs.
Bianco led off the second by pulling a double down the right-field line before Jarrard scorched an RBI double to the wall in center field, 5-0. After Manhattan recorded a pair of outs, Serafinko helped her own cause by lining an RBI single through the right side to drive home Jarrard, 6-0.
In the top of the third, the Jaspers tallied their first run of the ballgame when Lindsey Hoag and Brianna Estevez executed a double-steal play, 6-1.
The Johnnies put two on in the bottom half of the third with Casto reaching on an error and Konopka driving a single up the middle. With runners on the corner, Bianco recorded an RBI bunt single, beating the throw to first and plating Casto, 7-1. Manhattan then recorded two outs before Lysiak drove a double into left-center, scoring Konopka, 8-1. A wild pitch then allowed Bianco to come home from third and give the Red Storm a 9-1 lead.
The Jaspers added a pair of runs in both the top of the fourth and fifth to cut into St. John's lead, 9-5.
To begin the bottom of the fifth, the Red Storm generated three consecutive walks, loading the bases with no outs. Serafinko then grounded out to first, allowing a run to come in, 10-5. Sarah Post drew the fourth walk of the frame, loading the bases once again for Santos who drew another walk to plate another run, 11-5. An out later, Konopka slapped an RBI single into left field, 12-5. During the next at-bat, a wild pitch allowed Post to cross the plate to enforce the run-ahead rule and give St. John's a 13-5 victory.
The Johnnies will continue BIG EAST play when they head to Indianapolis this weekend to take on Butler in a three-game series beginning on Friday.
