Red Storm will face Bulldogs for the first time ever in its conference tournament history
UNCASVILLE, Conn. – The eighth-seeded St. John's women's basketball team (15-14, 5-13 BIG EAST) will open the 2025 BIG EAST Tournament presented by JEEP against ninth-seeded Butler on Friday morning at 11 a.m. from Mohegan Sun Arena.
Friday's opening round will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports with Adam Giardino and Edona Thaqi on the call from Mohegan Sun. The winner will advance to meet top-seeded No. 3/3 UConn in the quarterfinal round at 12 p.m. on Saturday on FS1.
The Red Storm arrive at Mohegan Sun Arena with a 15-14 overall record and closed out conference competition with a 5-13 mark. The Johnnies have won four conference tournament titles in 1983, '84, '88 and 2016 and have moved into the quarterfinal round in each of the last 14 tournaments.
The Red Storm hold a 5-5 record as an eight seed and have never faced Butler in the BIG EAST Tournament since the Bulldogs joined the league in 2014.
Lashae Dwyer was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection on Thursday, announced by the league office. The pesty guard becomes just the third St. John's player in program history to earn the honor joining Aliyyah Handford (2015-16) and Aaliyah Lewis (2016-17). Dwyer ranks 10th in NCAA Division I with 88 steals and 11th in the country logging 3.0 swipes per contest, both marks lead the conference. The Toronto native is flying up the leaderboards and currently ranks tied for fifth in program history for most steals in a single-season. The Miami transfer has been the catalyst offensively averaging a team-high 13.6 points per game and has tallied double-figures in 23 of 29 appearances.
Dwyer leads a Red Storm unit that ranks 25th in the nation in scoring defense limiting opponents to just 56.3 points per game. The Johnnies have limited 18 opponents to fewer than 60 points and four to under 40.
In its regular season finale, St. John's dropped an overtime thriller on Sunday at DePaul, 65-64. The back-and-forth affair at Wintrust Arena featured 15 ties and 11 lead changes. The Red Storm tied the score with nine seconds left to play to force the extra period. In overtime, Dwyer made a clutch bucket with 4.4 seconds left on the clock to take a one-point lead before the Blue Demons responded with a pair of game-winning free throws.
Ber'Nyah Mayo exploded for a season-high 27 points in Chicago, the most by a Red Storm player this season. The 27-point performance marked the highest by a Red Storm player this season and the most in her career since finished with a career-high 29 points on Feb. 8, 2023, while at UMass. Over her last three outings, the graduate student is recording 20.7 points per game and has finished in double-digits in scoring in 13 of her last 15 games.
In the first and only meeting between the two sides, the Red Storm coasted past the Bulldogs, 65-43, on Feb. 16 at Madison Square Garden. The Johnnies dominated the third quarter outscoring Butler, 22-6, to pull away for a convincing victory at the World's Most Famous Arena. Dwyer led all scorers with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting and Phoenix Gedeon logged a near double-double of 13 points and nine rebounds.
Butler heads to Mohegan Sun Arena with a 15-16 overall record and a 5-13 mark in BIG EAST play. The Bulldogs will look to pick up their first BIG EAST Tournament victory since the 2018 season
The team is led by All-BIG EAST Second Team selection Kilyn McGuff, who has posted 12.7 points and 8.0 rebounds per game, the latter ranks fourth in the BIG EAST. The senior is also an efficient shooter, posting a 44.3 field goal percentage and 38.8 3-point percentage.
The Red Storm lead the all-time series, 17-5, and have won nine of the last 10 meetings. For more information on the 2025 Women's Basketball Tournament at Mohegan Sun visit the Tournament Central.
