Eighth-Seeded St. John’s Orchestrates Dominant Second Half to Down Ninth-Seeded Butler in BIG EAST Tournament First Round, 66-50

Red Storm outscored the Bulldogs 38-17 in the second half
UNCASVILLE, Conn.– The eighth-seeded St. John's women's basketball (16-14, 5-13 BIG EAST) rallied from a nine point first half deficit to dominate the second half and cruise past ninth-seeded Butler (15-17, 5-13 BIG EAST), 66-50, in the BIG EAST Tournament First Round on Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena.
After trailing by as many nine in the opening half, the Red Storm dominated the latter stanza outscoring the Bulldogs 38-17 and not committing a single turnover over the final 20 minutes. The Johnnies shot a season-high shot a season-high 58.3 percent (28-48) from field goal range as six players finished with eight points or more.
The Red Storm will advance to the quarterfinal round for the 15th consecutive tournament and will meet top-seeded No. 3/3 UConn tomorrow at 12 p.m. on FS1.
Ber'Nyah Mayo led all scorers with 16 points and shot 7-for-13 (53.8%) on Friday afternoon in Uncasville, Conn.
Skye Owen provided a huge spark for the Red Storm tallying 13 points on 6-of-10 (60%) shooting and a season-high five steals. Lashae Dwyer finished with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block.
Kylie Lavelle (9), Jailah Donald (8) and Ariana Vanderhoop (8) all made timely buckets as the Red Storm overcame a 33-28 halftime deficit in its first-ever BIG EAST Tournament meeting with Butler.
St. John's recorded 10 steals in its opening conference tournament game and turned the double-digit swipes into 24 points off turnovers. The Red Storm locked down defensively in the second half limiting the Bulldogs to 28.6 percent (6-21) shooting in the latter stanza.

As the tournament tipped off, Lavelle recorded the first bucket of the tournament connecting on a corner triple off a dish from Skye Owen. Butler tacked on the next six points before a Dwyer triple knotted the scoreline, 6-6 at the 5:46 mark. Later in the frame, Skye Owen came up with a steal and raced to the other end for the lay-in. The Bulldogs scored as the first quarter buzzer sounded to carry a 16-10 lead after 10 minutes.
In the second stanza, the Red Storm struck first as Gedeon finished at the rim off the entry pass from Mayo. The Bulldogs stretched their advantage to nine after a three-point play from Jaynes, 21-12. The Red Storm struck back as Mayo fired a long pass into the paint into the waiting hands of Lavelle for the easy lay-in, After Butler took a seven-point lead Donald flushed a triple to cap off a 7-0 scoring run that tied the game at 28.
In the start of the third quarter, Owen picked off a pass and won the footrace to the cup. The swarming Red Storm defense forced another steal as Dwyer stripped the Butler ballhandler and darted for the lay-in to quick cut the deficit to one just 33 seconds into the second half to force a Butler timeout, 33-32. The teams traded blows going back-and-forth on made mid-range jumpers as there was three ties in the middle of the third period. Donald knocked down another pivotal 3-pointer to take St. John's first lead since the opening minute of the game. Mayo finished a runner as the Red Storm outscored Butler, 21-11, in the third stanza to take a five-point edge into the final frame. The Red Storm shot 71.4 percent (10-14) from field goal range during the third quarter.
In the final frame, St. John's padded to its lead after Donald swiped it away and found Vanderhoop for the lay-in. Dwyer finished a reverse lay-in before Owen connected from beyond-the-arc to conclude an 11-0 scoring run and balloon the Johnnies lead to 12, 56-44, with under seven minutes to play. The Red Storm held the Bulldogs scoreless for the final 4:43 of the contest and held them just six points in the final quarter to tally its largest margin of victory in a BIG EAST Tournament game in five years.
