St. John’s Wraps up Non-Conference Play With 13-11 Victory Over Hobart in Ridgefield, Conn.

Brian Kelly and Ryan Ormond combined for 11 points in the win
RIDGEFIELD, CONN. (March 22, 2025) – The St. John's lacrosse team took down Hobart on Saturday at Ridgefield High School, 13-11, in a game it never trailed.
The Johnnies (4-6) took an early 3-0 lead and used strong performances by Brian Kelly, Ryan Ormond and the team's defense to earn their second straight win heading into conference play.
After tallying a career-best nine points in the Red Storm's victory over Marist last Saturday, Kelly picked up right where he left off, going for four goals and three helpers against the Statesmen. The senior attackman has three four-score games this season and four performances with at least five points. The seven points on Saturday moves Kelly into third place on the program's all-time scoring list with 181 career points. The Red Hook, N.Y., native has found the back of the net in 13 consecutive games and has eclipsed the 40-point mark for the fourth time in his career.
Ormond had his second-consecutive four-goal outing on Saturday, marking the fourth time this year the Waxhaw, N.C., product has hit the four-score mark. Fellow rookies Jayson Cardenas and Mitch Campbell each had multi-point efforts in the win. Cardenas had two clutch fourth-quarter goals, reaching multiple points for the seventh time in the last eight games, while Campbell recorded a score and a pair of helpers.
Drew Wasserman scored two times for his second-straight two-goal game, giving the graduate student has nine goals this season.
Bobby Seel's assist extended his team-best point streak to 25 games, while Tyson Meade recorded his first career helper and Adrian Nowak had his 15th assist of 2025.
Patrick Scarborough had 16 saves on 27 shots faces, earning his second win in a row between the pipes, and his 59.3 percent save rate ties his season best. The Dickinson transfer has at least 10 saves in each of his last six outings and has six performances with a save percentage over 50.
Defensively, Dylan Lee had three caused turnovers and four groundballs, while rookie Drew Lindsay forced two giveaways and grabbed four loose balls. The Red Storm had 11 caused turnovers as a team and won the turnover battle, 15-7.
Saturday was St. John's first all-time win over Hobart in the third meeting between the two programs.
Kelly wasted no time starting the scoring for St. John's, finding the back of the net twice in the game's first 2:38. Ormond made it 3-0 33 seconds later off a feed from Nowak, prompting an early Hobart timeout. The Statesmen scored the game's next two goals to make it 3-2, but Ormond's second of the opening quarter reestablished a two-goal advantage. Hobart tallied one more at the end of the quarter to make it 4-3 after 15 minutes.
The Johnnies opened the second quarter with a 3-0 run to take its largest lead of the afternoon, 7-3. Wasserman scored on the man-up, and Ormond completed his hat trick just over a minute later. At the 2:05 mark, Kelly finished the run with a transition goal, scoring off Meade's pass at the 2:05 mark. Hobart scored two in the quarter's final 1:32 to cut the Johnnies' advantage to two, 7-5, heading into the locker room.
Scarborough excelled in the third frame, making eight saves and holding the Statesmen off the scoreboard for the first 13:11 of the quarter, allowing the Red Storm to extend its lead. Kelly's fourth score early in the third made it 8-5, and Wasserman's second man-up goal of the game brought the lead back to four, 9-5.
Hobart rattled off four straight scores to tie the game at 9-9 2:58 into the final quarter, but Campbell assisted Ormond and Cardenas goals 1:04 apart to put the Red Storm back in front, 11-9. After another Statesmen tally, Cardenas found twine for the second time in the quarter and Campbell scored unassisted to put St. John's up three, 13-10, with 5:24 remaining. Hobart was able to get back within two, but strong defensive play over the final stretch carried the Red Storm over the finish line.
The Johnnies will head to Milwaukee, Wisc., next Saturday to kick off BIG EAST play against Marquette. Faceoff is set for noon.
