St. John’s Takes Down Providence, 9-2

The Red Storm take the opening game of the three-game series and improve to 6-1 in conference play
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team (24-10-1, 6-1) took down Providence, 9-2, in the opening contest of a three-game series on Friday afternoon at Red Storm Field.
Ana Serafinko was stellar inside the circle, recording her 11th win of the season. The left-hander allowed just two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out 10 batters across the full seven innings. Serafinko lowered her season ERA to 2.07 and has totaled 177 strikeouts in 108 innings pitched.
London Jarrard drove in three runs for the Johnnies in the contest by crushing her sixth home run of the season with a two-run shot in the opening frame. The shortstop tacked on an RBI single in the third inning, bringing her team-leading RBI total to 36.
Jess Bianco continued to be a hit machine, going 3-for-4, and came around to score all three times. The center fielder leads the squad with 50 hits and 39 runs scored in 2025.
Anese Thompson and Celia Macari each added two RBIs for the Red Storm. Thompson notched her third double of the season in the fifth inning, bringing home two runs while Macari drove home a run on an RBI single in the same frame. Cassidy Stouffer rounded out the scoring with an RBI single.
Serafinko started off hot inside the circle, striking out the side in the top of the first to keep the game scoreless.
In the home half of the first, Bianco led off by batting through a 14-pitch bat, reaching on an infield single to shortstop. Bianco then swiped second before Jarrard crushed a two-run home run to right field, giving the Red Storm an early 2-0 lead.
Cameron Dunn led off the top of the second by blooping a single down the right-field line. Dunn then advanced to second on a groundout before swiping third. A passed ball allowed Dunn to come across to give Providence its first run of the ballgame, 2-1.
Serafinko settled back in on the rubber in the top of the third, striking out a pair of batters in a 1-2-3 frame to hold the score at 2-1 in favor of St. John's.
St. John's added to its lead in the bottom of the third on a Jarrard RBI single through the right side, bringing home Madison Konopka who was drilled by a pitch to lead off the frame, 3-1.
After a blank fourth inning, the Friars inched closer in the top of the fifth, plating a run on an Elisa Smith RBI single up the middle, 3-2.
The Red Storm responded in the bottom of the fifth by scoring three runs. It started with Bianco hitting a lead-off single to shortstop and advancing to second on a throwing error. Elanna Lysiak then drilled a double to left field, putting runners on second and third with one out. Thompson delivered the big hit of the frame, pulling a two-RBI double down the left-field line that deflected off the third baseman, 5-2. Macari tacked on another with an RBI single to center field, plating Paige Sterling, who pinch-ran for Thompson, 6-2.
Inside the circle, Serafinko notched her eighth and ninth strikeout of the contest by tossing a clean top of the sixth to hold onto the Red Storm's four-run advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Johnnies generated runners at second and third with a Natalie Casto hit by pitch and a Bianco bunt single. A passed ball allowed a run to score before a Lysiak walk and Thompson hit by pitch loaded the bases for Stouffer, who sent an RBI single into center field, 8-2. Macari brought home another run on a bases-loaded walk, giving St. John's a 9-2 lead.
Serafinko closed out the game in the top of the seventh, sitting Providence down 1-2-3 while recording her 10th punchout of the contest to seal the 9-2 victory for the Red Storm.
St. John's and Providence will continue its series at 2 p.m. tomorrow afternoon at Red Storm Field.
