The Red Storm (12-12) has now won four straight games and nine of its last 10 contests after knocking off Wagner, 6-3, in Staten Island, N.Y., on Tuesday before taking down Central Connecticut State, 8-7, in Queens on Wednesday.
The Johnnies jumped out to a 5-0 advantage after the second inning and led wire-to-wire en route to a 6-3 victory over the Seahawks at SIUH Community Park in Staten Island, last Tuesday. Will Cowan racked up two hits, a double, three RBIs and a stolen base against the Seahawks, while Jon LeGrande also tallied a pair of hits and walks, reaching base in all four of his plate appearances, alongside a run scored.
After falling behind 5-0 in the seventh inning, St. John's mounted a late eight-run comeback over the final three frames to earn its third walk-off win of the season and defeat the Blue Devils, 8-7, last Wednesday. Jared Beebe scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning off a balk issued to the Blue Devil's catcher. Jayder Raifstanger and Adam Agresti both tallied two hits, including a home run, with a pair of RBIs in the contest. Chris Batuyios put together a gutsy outing in his first start of the year, allowing no runs on two hits with a trio of strikeouts across four innings of work.
Since falling to NJIT on March 7, the Johnnies have caught fire, going 11-2 since then with three straight series wins over NJIT, Maine and Winthrop. The squad has also been perfect at home with a 7-0 record in the stretch. St. John's bats have been hot, scoring five or more runs in 11 contests and 10 or more tallies in five during the 13-game span.
Since the beginning March, four everyday starters, Jace Jeremiah, LeGrande, Raifstanger and Luke Orbon, are all batting over .300. Agresti leads the pack with eight extra bases hits, consisting of four doubles and four homers. LeGrande paces the team with 12 RBIs, while five other players have logged 10 or more in the period.
As a team, the Johnnies rank second in the BIG EAST with nine triples and 41 stolen bases. Nationally, the Red Storm sits 26th in triples and 73rd in stolen bags. Raifstanger is among the top hitters in the nation, racking up 36 hits, which is good enough for 77th in the country. Jackson Tucker enters the week 17th on the national stage with 17 stolen bases on the year. Beebe is 19th in NCAA Division I with three triples this season.
St. John's and Washington will square off for the second time in the all-time series on Tuesday afternoon. In the sole meeting between the two teams, the Huskies came out on top, 6-3, on March 2, 2007, in neutral territory in Greenville, N.C. The Red Storm is seeking its first win over a Big Ten opponent since it took down Penn State, 18-4, on Feb. 25, 2018, in Cary, N.C.
Washington will head to Queens to face the Red Storm with a 12-17 overall record and a 5-4 mark in the Big Ten. The Huskies most recently dropped their three-game series to Rutgers (W 3-1, L 13-4, L 6-3) in Piscataway, N.J.
