Jared Beebe and Jace Jeremiah both hit a home run
Jared Beebe and Jace Jeremiah both logged three hits apiece, including a home run at Jack Kaiser Stadium. Beebe also scored three runs and batted in two, while Jeremiah tallied two scores and two RBIs. Jackson Tucker scored a trio of runs on one hit, alongside a pair of walks against the Huskies.
Shaun McMillan registered a pair of RBIs with a run, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double. Luke Orbon also contributed three RBIs on Tuesday afternoon.
The Huskies hit the ground running in the top of the first inning, as AJ Guerrero opened the game by hitting a double down the left field line, moving to third on a passed ball and scoring on a sacrifice fly to give Washington a 1-0 edge. The away team proceeded to load the bases but Evan Hoeckele was able to retire the side with a strikeout and a groundout to allow no further damage.
The Red Storm knotted things up, 1-1, in the bottom of the first, after Beebe blasted an opposite-field home run to right for his first long ball of the season.
Washington tacked on another three tallies in the away side of the second stanza. With one out, Colin Blanchard singled through the right side and was brought around the bases on a Guerrero home run. Another run would score for Washington after a runner went home on a caught stealing attempt at second base, giving the Huskies the lead back, 4-1.
In the home half of the second inning, Jeremiah smashed his first long ball of the year into the Red Storm's bullpen, cutting St. John's deficit down to two, 4-2.
The Huskies added another score in the third frame. Jackson Hotchkiss singled into center field, stole second and then scored on a base hit, growing the away advantage back to three, 5-2.
The Johnnies registered a four-spot in the bottom half of the third frame. Tucker opened the inning by working a five-pitch walk and moving over to second on a wild pitch, ahead of Jayder Raifstanger reaching on a catcher's interference. Beebe then juiced the bases with a single for McMillan, who smacked a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Tucker. Will Cowan proceeded to whack a single through the left side, bringing Raifstanger home, in front of another run heading to the plate on a fielder's choice. Jeremiah capped off the scoring by sending an RBI one-bagger into right field and giving the Red Storm a slim, 6-5 lead.
Washington retook the lead with a three-run top of the fourth. After the Huskies loaded the bases from three free passes, they scored a run on a groundout, before walking in another pair of tallies to go back on top, 8-6.
The away squad extended its lead to four, 10-6, in the fifth inning as Jackson Hotchkiss sent a two-run shot over the batter's eye in center field. In the top of the sixth, the Huskies used a sacrifice fly and an RBI base knock to extend their lead to six, 12-6.
St. John's scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth frame. Following a Jeremiah single and Tucker's second free pass of the contest, Beebe singled up the middle, sending Jeremiah home. McMillan then doubled into deep left field to score Tucker, prior to Beebe stepping on home plate from a wild pitch. Cristian Bernardini and Adam Agresti worked back-to-back walks, loading the bases for Orbon who laced a three-run double into left field, tying the ballgame 12-12.
Washington grabbed the lead right back in the seventh, benefiting from a three-run shot and a single to go in front, 16-12.
In the bottom of the seventh, Jon LeGrande and Tucker opened the side by producing two-straight base hits. Raifstanger then smacked a single through the right side to bring LeGrande home, while Tucker scored on a double play, chopping the away lead down to two, 16-14.
The Huskies earned another six runs off a pair of RBI singles and a three-run homer in the eighth to increase their advantage to eight, 22-14. The Red Storm couldn't generate any runs in the bottom of the frame, as Washington closed out the game due to getaway travel time restrictions.
The Red Storm will open up BIG EAST play this weekend with a three-game set against Seton Hall. The series will kick off on Friday at 3 p.m. from Jack Kaiser Stadium.
