Eighth-Seeded St. John’s to Face Top-Seeded No. 3/3 UConn on Saturday on FS1 in BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinal

Red Storm advanced on Friday after defeating Butler, 66-50
UNCASVILLE, Conn.– After advancing to the BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinals for the 15th consecutive season, the eighth-seeded St. John's women's basketball team (16-14, 5-13 BIG EAST) will face top-seeded No. 3/3 UConn (28-3, 18-0 BIG EAST) on Saturday at 12 p.m. on FS1 on Mohegan Sun Arena.
The national telecast will air on FS1 with John Fanta and Kim Adams on the call from Mohegan Sun Arena. Allison Williams will serve as the sideline reporter. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
The Red Storm rallied from a halftime deficit dominating over the final 20 minutes to down Butler, 66-50, in the opening round on Friday in Uncasville, Conn. The Johnnies shot a season-high 58.3 percent (28-48) during Friday's win and didn't commit a single turnover in the second half. St. John's outscored the Bulldogs 38-17 over the latter stanza and held them to 6.7 percent (1-15) from beyond-the-arc.
The Red Storm recorded double-digit steals for the 11th time this season and converted the takeaways into 24 points off turnovers. The Johnnies defense held an opponent to 50 points or less for the 12th time this season and are limiting the opposition to 56.1 points per game.
Ber'Nyah Mayo led all scorers with 16 points on 7-of-13 (53.8%) shooting in Friday's victory over the Bulldogs. The graduate student is averaging 21.0 points per contest over her last three games and was tabbed to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday.
Skye Owen went for 13 points on 6-for-10 shooting and a season-high five steals at Mohegan Sun Arena. Lashae Dwyer was the third Johnnie to reach double-digits adding 10 points. The BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year recorded three steals and moved to 91 for the year to move to fourth all-time in program history surpassing Laura Flowers, who logged 89 swipes during the 1976-77 season.
Six Red Storm players chipped in eight points or more in the efficient shooting effort as Kylie Lavelle (9), Jailah Donald (8) and Ariana Vanderhoop (8) added to the scoring effort. Phoenix Gedeon pulled down a game-high seven rebounds and leads the team averaging a team-best 4.8 boards per game.
The Johnnies will meet the Huskies in the BIG EAST Tournament for the seventh time in their postseason history. UConn has won five of the six meetings between the two in the conference tournament with the last St. John's victory coming in 1987 at duPont Pavilion in Villanova, Pa.
The Huskies have won the last four meetings in the series and swept the Red Storm this season. St. John's picked up its last win over UConn on Feb. 21, 2023 downing the 11-time National Champions at the XL Center, 69-64.
UConn is seeking its 30th BIG EAST Tournament Championship and registered a perfect 18-0 record in conference play this season. The Huskies moved to No. 3 in the national polls this week and hold a 28-3 overall record this season.
The Huskies lead NCAA Division I in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.0), field goal percentage (51.2%) and scoring margin (+29.2) and ranks second in the country logging 21.2 assists per game. The squad has won the last four BIG EAST Tournament titles since it re-entered the league in 2021.
BIG EAST Player of the Year Paige Bueckers leads UConn averaging 18.6 points per game and shoots 53.8 percent from the field, 40.8 percent from 3-point range and 88.8 percent from the charity stripe. Sarah Strong captured BIG EAST Freshman of the Year honors and tallies 16.1 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 1.5 blocks per game.
