No. 1 St. John’s To Open BIG EAST Tournament Play on Friday Against No. 8 Villanova

QUEENS, N.Y. (April 17, 2025) – The No. 1 St. John's men's tennis team will start its quest for a BIG EAST Championship on Friday when it takes on eighth-seeded Villanova in the quarterfinals. First serve from the Cayce Tennis Center is set for 12:45 p.m.

This is the fourth in the last seven years the Johnnies have been selected as the top seed in the tournament, having also claimed the No. 1 spot in 2019, 2022 and 2024. The Red Storm has advanced to the championship match in five straight seasons under Head Coach Dillon Pottish.
St. John's is a program record 22-2 and a perfect 4-0 in BIG EAST play, most recently taking down Elon, 4-0, on Tuesday in a neutral-site tune-up match.
Ryota Kaneda has led the Johnnies this season, going a combined 32-1 across all dual-match competitions. The senior was a perfect 16-0 in doubles action, with 15 of the victories coming alongside Adam Groves, and triumphed in 16 of his 17 singles contests.
Max Amling and Leonardo Mileikowsky have also had strong campaigns, winning 14 singles matches each. All 19 of Amling's contests came at the top singles position.
Carl Gustavsson went 12-4 this season and 12-3 on the No. 2 court, while Danilo Raicevic won 10 of his 12 contests, including each of his last four.
The Johnnies took down the Wildcats, 6-0, on April 9 in Queens, behind dominant singles performances from Amling, Gustavsson, and Mileikowsky. St. John's is 17-0 all-time against Villanova and is 5-0 against the Wildcats in the conference tournament. When the two programs last met in the 2022 rendition of the event, the Red Storm earned a 4-0 sweep.
The winner of Friday's quarterfinal will face the winner of No. 4 Butler and No. 5 Georgetown in the semifinals on Saturday at 1 p.m.
