St. John’s Gears Up for Outdoor Metropolitan Championships and Sam Howell Invitational

The Red Storm will split up for the first time this season
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's track & field team will split up for the first time this weekend between the Outdoor Metropolitan Championships at Icahn Stadium and Princeton's Sam Howell Invitational in Princeton, N.J.
The Outdoor Metropolitan Championships will kick off on Friday at 11 a.m. at Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island, while the Sam Howell Invitational will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
Last season, the Johnnies finished in second place at the Metropolitan Championships, racking up 121 points after winning the shot put and triple jump.
The Red Storm will participate in Princeton's annual home meet for the first time since the 2021-22 season. The squad collected four wins in the 400-meter hurdles, the 4x100-meter relay, the 4x400-meter relay and the javelin throw at the meet.
The Johnnies dominated last weekend at their annual home meet The Big Hurt, racking up 10 wins and 24 top-five finishes across 12 events.
Leyre Campo de Quevedo led the Johnnies' distance group, finishing in first place in the 1,500-meter run with an event record finishing time of 4:38.21 in her first collegiate appearance in the race. Later in the day, the freshman picked up a second-place mark of 2:22.58 in her first-ever 800-meter run.
The Red Storm shined in the shot put, as Jamora Alves, Juliet Smith and Desiree Pagan took the top three spots in the event. Alves set an event record of 14.35 meters for first place, while Smith followed behind her in second with a heave of 11.95 meters. Pagan rounded out the Johnnies' effort in the shot put, recording a throw of 11.93 meters.
St. John's won all three of the jump events last Saturday. In her first meet of the year, Linn Hertz won the long jump with a leap of 5.48 meters. Ashley Sadler added a win to the Red Storm's total in the high jump, leaping a meet and personal-record 1.63 meters. Fia Viklund won the triple jump with a meet-record and personal-best leap of 11.89 meters.
The Red Storm's 4x400-meter relay squad of Leslie, Torres, Sadler and Wiltshire took the top spot in the event, breezing across the track in 4:14.81.
Following this weekend's split action, the Red Storm will regroup and head to Tampa, Fla., for the USF Invitational on Saturday, April 12.
