AMHERST, Va.– St. John's men's golfer Peicheng Chen carded an even par, 70, after the first round at the NCAA Amherst Regional at Poplar Grove Golf Club in Virginia.
The Johnnies standout sits knotted for 20th place overall four strokes off the lead after the conclusion of the opening 18 holes from Amherst, Va.
The senior played the first 15 holes of his first round on Sunday before play was suspended due to darkness at 8:15 p.m. The Beijing, China native resumed early Monday morning on the 16th tee box at 7:30 a.m. logging a birdie on the 18th hole to climb back to even for the round.
Chen finished the opening 18 holes with six birdies, which ranks tied for fifth most amongst the tournament field. He posted a 2.50 stroke average, which ranks atop the regional thus far.
After two pars to open the tournament on Sunday and then a bogey on the 604-yard par-5 third hole, Chen recorded his first birdie of the tournament on his first par-3, taking an advantage of squaring one close to the hole off the tee to get back to even par. The senior logged his second consecutive birdie on fifth hole on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
After a double bogey on the lengthy sixth hole, he rebounded with a dazzling birdie on the eight before racking up his fourth birdie over the last six holes to close the front nine at 1-under, 34.
Heading to the back nine, he double-bogeyed the 10th followed by two straight pars. On the 13th, the All-BIG EAST First Team selection delivered a strike with his iron that landed inside five-feet from the pin, tapping home a birdie putt to once again climb back to even par.
The Johnnies' three-time team MVP bogeyed his final hole on Sunday before competition was halted taking a 1-over into the clubhouse with three holes left to play on Monday morning.
Chen started bright and early on Monday morning nailing a pair of par-saving putts going into the final hole. On the par-4 18th, he capitalized on a birdie opportunity sliding one in from 15-feet out to get to even heading into the second round.
Chen will begin the second round at 12:16 p.m. from the Blue Ridge Mountains. Live results will be available throughout the tournament on SCOREBOARD.
