St. John’s to Welcome Villanova for Crucial BIG EAST Series

The Red Storm has won five straight games
QUEENS, N.Y. – Cruising with a five-game winning streak, the St. John's baseball team will welcome Villanova to Jack Kaiser Stadium in Queens, N.Y., for a crucial three-game series, starting on Friday night at 6 p.m.
First pitch for Saturday's contest is slated for 3 p.m. while Sunday's game will begin at 1 p.m. The entire series will be streamed on ESPN+ with live stats available on RedStormSports.com.
The Red Storm (25-20, 9-6 BIG EAST) is coming off a dominant 8-4 win over Stony Brook on Tuesday at Jack Kaiser Stadium in Queens, N.Y. Shaun McMillan contributed a triple, two RBIs and a run at Jack Kaiser Stadium while Jon LeGrande notched a pair of RBIs on one hit and a walk. Jackson Tucker had a great showing on his senior day, scoring two runs with an RBI and three steals on Tuesday.
With his three swipes against the Seawolves, Tucker became the baseball program's all-time career stolen bases leader, surpassing Ron Naclerio, who has held the record since 1979. The Staten Island, N.Y., native has now racked up 96 career swipes in his four-year tenure in Queens. Additionally, the speedy outfielder is just five scores away from tying Matt Wessinger for second on the program's career runs list, having racked up 189 in his career.
On Monday, Jed Boyle was named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week. The righty tossed five scoreless innings, with only two hits and a walk alongside eight strikeouts, a win and a save across three appearances against Iona and Georgetown. In BIG EAST play, the graduate student has notched a 0.96 ERA and a .22 whip, with three wins, two saves and 12 strikeouts in 9.1 frames of work.
LeGrande was named to the league's weekly honor roll on Monday after slashing .600/.632/1.333 with a team-best nine hits, three homers, two doubles, eight runs, six RBIs, and nine stolen bases last week. On the season, LeGrande leads the Johnnies with a .368 batting average, alongside 39 runs scored, 42 RBIs, six doubles, six homers, four triples and 30 stolen bases.
As a team, the Johnnies enter the second to last weekend of the regular season ranked second in the BIG EAST and 78th in the nation with a .293 batting average. The team is also second in doubles (89), hits (463) and scoring (7.3 R/G), third in triples (14) and steals (84). Nationally, the Red Storm is 39th in triples and 58th in stolen bases. Jared Beebe is 8th in the country with 21 doubles while LeGrande is 20th in NCAA Division I with 30 steals, as of May 8.
St. John's and Villanova will square off for the 100th time in the all-time series when the two teams meet on Friday. The Johnnies hold a 64-35 overall record against the Wildcats with a 30-17 record in Queens. Last season, the Red Storm swept Villanova (W 13-7, W 11-0, W 3-1) in Plymouth Meeting, Pa. In their last meeting in Queens during the 2023 season, the Wildcats took the series, 2-1 (L 3-4, L 9-10, W 13-3).
Villanova will head to New York City to battle St. John's with a 20-24 overall record and a 4-11 mark in BIG EAST play. The Wildcats have lost its last seven games, including two conference series to Creighton and UConn. Villanova's last win came on April 22, when it took down Bucknell, 11-1, in seven innings.
Austin Lemon leads the team with a .360 batting average. The redshirt freshman has also amassed 50 hits, five doubles, 31 scores, 21 RBIs and 22 walks. Jason Neff has been on a tear, batting .335 with 53 hits, a whopping 15 homers, 42 runs scored and 60 RBIs.
Luke McCollough has registered a starting rotation-best 4.38 ERA with 45 strikeouts and only 16 walks across 11 starts and 63.3 innings pitched.
Following this weekend's BIG EAST series, the Red Storm will head to Long Island to take on Hofstra on Tuesday, May 13. First pitch from Hempstead, N.Y., is set for 3 p.m.
