VILLANOVA, Pa. – The top-seeded St. John's softball team (39-16-1, 19-5 BIG EAST) fell in its BIG EAST Tournament second-round matchup to fourth-seeded Creighton, 5-3, on Thursday afternoon at the Villanova Softball Complex.
Jess Bianco tied the St. John's single-season program record for hits, tallying her 73rd knock of the year with a single to right field in the bottom of the first. The center fielder also came around to score her 54th run of the season, growing her program record.
Anese Thompson and Cassidy Stouffer paced the offense with two hits apiece, including a pair of RBI singles. Stouffer now has 27 RBIs, while Thompson has batted in 24 on the year.
Ana Serafinko recorded her 13th RBI to round out the scoring for the Johnnies. The two-way player also drew the start in the circle, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits while striking out four batters in six innings of work.
After Serafinko kicked off the contest with a 1-2-3 frame, the Red Storm put two runners on right away with a Bianco single and London Jarrard reaching on error. An out later, Thompson went the other way, driving an RBI single into right field, 1-0. Serafinko tacked on another with an RBI groundout before Stouffer drove a long base hit off the wall in center field to give the Red Storm a 3-0 lead after the first inning of play.
Creighton (29-23, 15-9 BIG EAST) threatened to respond in the top of the second, generating its first hit and a walk to put a runner in scoring position. Serafinko got out of the jam, recording her second punchout to maintain St. John's three-run edge.
In the top of the third, the Blue Jays got a pair of runs back on a Lily West RBI groundout and a Kaelan Schultz double to right-center, 3-2.
Elanna Lysiak and Stouffer pieced together a pair of base hits in the home half of the third, but Creighton's starter Kenzie Schopfer managed to record the third out and keep the Red Storm's advantage to one run.
