St. John’s to Host No. 2 Marshall for Friday Night Battle

Red Storm will face second straight top-five opponent for the first time since 2001
QUEENS, N.Y. – Following a draw on the road at No. 5 Wake Forest on Sunday, the St. John's men's soccer team will face its second-straight top-five opponent on Thursday night when it welcomes No. 2 Marshall on Friday night.
The Red Storm will face its second consecutive top-five squad for the first time since 2001, when it battled then-No. 1 SMU and then-No. 5 Indiana during the NCAA Tournament as it made its run to the College Cup.
Friday night's match will be streamed on ESPN+ with Ralph Bednarczyk and Johnny Gadamowitz on the call from Queens. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com and tickets can be purchased here.

The Red Storm is coming off a scoreless draw on the road at No. 5 Wake Forest at Spry Stadium on Sunday night. The tie marked St. John's result against a top-five opponent on the road since it drew then-No. 3 USF on Oct. 10, 2009, 1-1.
Guilherme Gomes was tabbed TopDrawer Soccer National Player of the Week this week after breaking the school freshman record with four goals in the 5-0 rout of New Hampshire on Aug. 28. The Sao Paulo, Brazil native was the first Johnnie since Lenny Wilson on Oct. 30, 2018 to win a national player of the week award. The midfielder was tabbed BIG EAST Freshmen and Offensive Player of the Week after becoming the first freshman across NCAA Division I to score four goals in a single-contest since VMI's Justin Reischer on Oct. 2, 2018.
Alec McLachlan was tabbed BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week after a pair of shutouts against the Wildcats and Demon Deacons. The Stockport, England native has tallied three clean sheets in the opening four matches of the season, marking a first for St. John's since the 2019 campaign. The senior holds a GAA of 0.50 and a .818 save percentage, both marks rank top-four in the conference.
The Red Storm are seeking its highest ranked win since it defeated then-No. 2 West Virginia, 1-0, in overtime in the BIG EAST Tournament Championship on Nov. 5, 2006.
Last season, the two sides squared off for the first time ever as St. John's and then-No. 6 Marshall battled to a 1-1 draw on Sept. 14, 2024 in Huntington, West Virginia.
Marshall, the reigning national runners-up enter Friday's match ranked No. 2 in the United Soccer Coaches' Poll Top-25. The Thundering Herd hold a 1-0-1 record through two matches this season. After opening the campaign with a 2-1 win over George Mason, Marshall drew then-No. 12 Virginia Tech in its last time out on Friday night, 2-2.
The Johnnies will begin a five-match home stand on Friday night and will be back in action at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium on Monday, Sept. 8 against Rhode Island at 7 p.m.
