Red Storm have now won 10 of its last 11 meetings against the Bulldogs
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's basketball team (14-4, 4-3 BIG EAST) outlasted Butler (7-10, 1-6 BIG EAST), 49-39, in a defensive battle at home on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Storm defense held the Bulldogs to just 39 points on 28.6% (16-56) shooting from the field and 18.2% (4-22) from 3-point range. It tied for the lowest BIG EAST opponent scoring total since the Johnnies limited Butler in a 47-35 victory on Feb. 13, 2021.
Daniela Abies eclipsed the 500-career rebound mark, reaching the milestone with the second of her eight rebounds in the game. St. John's won the battle on the boards, 49–39, led by Brooke Moore's team-high 10 rebounds.
For the fourth straight game, Beautiful Waheed topped all St. John's scorers. The junior finished just one point shy of her career high with 16 points, while setting a new personal best with five blocks. The Milwaukee native added six rebounds and was efficient from deep, knocking down 4-of-7 3-pointers (57.1%), shooting 50% (5-10) from the floor, and converting both of her free-throw attempts. Sa'Mya Wyatt also made a strong impact, scoring 13 points and tying her career high with four assists. Caroline Dotsey paced Butler with 10 points, six rebounds, and a block.
The opening eight minutes of the first quarter featured a back-and-forth battle, resulting in an 8–8 tie. St. John's briefly grabbed a two-point edge late in the period, but Butler answered with a three-pointer to move in front. The Red Storm closed the quarter with back-to-back baskets to take a 14–11 lead.
St. John's defense tightened to open the second, holding Butler scoreless for nearly seven minutes and forcing 10 consecutive missed shots stretching from the end of the first quarter. Moore and Kylie Lavelle jump-started the offense with six early points to extend the Red Storm's lead to 20–11. Butler responded with an 8–0 run to pull within one, but a pair of free throws from Wyatt and a timely three from Waheed sent St. John's into halftime up 25–21.
Butler briefly regained the lead midway through the third quarter with a 5–0 spurt, going ahead 26–25. The Red Storm quickly answered, as Moore and Lavelle fueled a 5–0 run to reclaim the advantage. Waheed capped the quarter with five points in the final two minutes, giving St. John's a 35–28 cushion entering the fourth.
Waheed and Wyatt accounted for 13 of St. John's 14 points in the final quarter. Waheed was flawless from long range, knocking down both of her three-point attempts during the stanza. Wyatt went 5-for-6 at the free-throw line for an 83.3% clip in the period. Butler mounted a late push, trimming the deficit to one with six minutes remaining, but St. John's shut the door and pulled away for a 49–39 victory over the Bulldogs.
The Red Storm will head to Georgetown to start a two-game road tilt on Tuesday, Jan. 13 for a 7 p.m. tip off at McDonough Arena.
