Red Storm student-athletes totaled over 300 hours of community service during the fall semester
QUEENS, N.Y. – Prior to the start of the indoor season, the St. John's track and field program completed another fall semester of community service with the Queens Center for Progress (QCP). Red Storm student-athletes hosted participants on campus to promote physical activity and a healthy lifestyle, accumulating over 300 hours of community service during the fall term.
QCP is a local center that is committed to providing person-centered services and supports to children and adults who have developmental disabilities. With facilities in both Jamaica and Bellerose, the goal of these services and supports is to promote independence, community involvement, and quality of life for its participants.
The partnership between QCP and the track and field program dates back to 2016 organized under the guidance of Director of Track and Field Aliann Pompey and Assistant Coach Lexia Robinson.
"This is a very meaningful experience to work with QCP. Our ladies don't see this as community service, but as a connection to the surrounding community. We take a lot of pride in hosting them," said Pompey. "I'm very pleased with Coach Robinson's efforts in continuing this partnership and organizing our weekly activities."
Starting on Sept. 10, members of the team committed to hosting the QCP Adult Center at the DaSilva Track and Field Complex. The program ran for ten weeks, ending on Nov. 12. Coach Robinson was responsible for the weekly activities, ranging from walking the track to bodyweight exercises and various games.
"Our partnership with Queens Center for Progress has been so much more than just a collaboration. It has created opportunities for connection and growth, while giving our track and field athletes the gift of perspective, compassion, and joy," said Robinson. "Together, we have spent a decade learning from one another, building relationships, and creating memories that remind us what true community really is."
Wendy Phaff Gennaro is the Director of Development at QCP and frequently accompanied participants from the nearby Adult Center in Jamaica to St. John's.
"The beauty of this relationship is that the individuals on TEAM QCP—part of QCP's athletic program—have the opportunity to work with the team members at St. John's, and the women of the track and field team get to share the love of their sport with the athletes," said Phaff Gennaro. "This does not just promote athleticism; it also promotes a sense of camaraderie, achievement, and accomplishment. At the end of the day, supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities is what it's all about."
QCP is dedicated to the goal of providing children and adults who have developmental disabilities the opportunities to make choices which will maximize their skill development, independence, and integration into community life. For more information about QCP, click here.
