St. John’s Drops Heartbreaker to Marquette, 56-55

The Golden Eagles knocked down the game-winning free throw with 22.3 seconds remaining
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker, 56-55, to Marquette that came down to the final seconds of Wednesday night contest at Carnesecca Arena.
The Red Storm (15-6, 5-5 BIG EAST) tied the score with 1:13 to play before Marquette's Olivia Porter knocked down the game-winning free throw with 22 seconds remaining in Queens.
Brooke Moore led the Johnnies with 16 points on an efficient 60 percent shooting from the floor, including 50 percent from three-point range. Moore also added four rebounds, three steals, two blocks, and an assist.
Beautiful Waheed chipped in 13 points, while Daniela Abies rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points and tied Sa'Mya Wyatt for a team-high seven rebounds.
Marquette (12-7, 6-4 BIG EAST) was led by Skylar Forbes and Lee Volker both finished in double figures, with Forbes leading the Golden Eagles with 12 points and Volker adding 11.
The opening quarter featured a back-and-forth battle, highlighted by three-pointers from Moore and Waheed. Marquette held the lead throughout the frame and built an advantage as large as four, but St. John's stayed within striking distance and trailed by just one, 15-14, at the end of the period.
St. John's opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run behind buckets from Wyatt and Waheed to take a 20-15 lead. A three from Jailah Donald extended the advantage to six, 23-17, before Marquette responded to reclaim the lead, 26-25, with four minutes remaining in the half. Kylie Lavelle answered with a clutch three-pointer and followed it up with a key block to give the Red Storm a 28-26 edge, heading into the break.
Moore, Waheed, and Wyatt combined for eight points during a stretch that pushed St. John's ahead 38-31 with six minutes remaining. Marquette mounted a late surge behind Forbes and Kennedi Perkins, trimming the deficit to one, 40-39, heading into the final quarter.
The Johnnies came out strong in the fourth, building a four-point cushion at 47-43, but Marquette answered to take a 51-49 lead with 5:35 remaining. Abies scored through contact to cut the margin to two before Halle Vice knocked down a pair of free throws to make it 55-51, with the Golden Eagles in front. Waheed muscled in a basket and Wyatt followed with two free throws to knot the score at 55 with 1:13 left. With 22.3 seconds remaining, Marquette's Olivia Porter converted one of two free throws to put the Golden Eagles ahead by one. St. John's (15-6, 5-5 BIG EAST) was unable to convert in the closing seconds and fell, 56-55.
