St. John’s Excels at the Dr. Sander Scorcher; Haugen Sets Program Record in 800-meters

The Red Storm won three events and recorded 13 top-10 performances
WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, N.Y. – The St. John's track and field team resumed its indoor campaign with a strong showing over two days of competition at the Dr. Sander Scorcher. The Red Storm registered three event wins and 13 top-10 performances. Results for this weekend's competition can be found at redstormsports.com.
Senior Nora Haugen was the highlight for the Johnnies, breaking her own school record in the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 3.90 seconds during the USA Pro/Elite section of the event. Haugen finished seventh in a field filled with professional athletes and top collegiate competitors, finishing ahead of two pros. The Norway product's time currently sits fourth in the NCAA. Harvard's Sophia Gorriaran finished two places ahead of Haugen with an NCAA-leading time of 2:01.30.
Also etching her name into the record books was senior Fia Viklund, who placed second in the invitational triple jump with a leap of 12.55 meters (42 feet, 2.25 inches). The mark sits third all-time in program history. The Swedish product now sits atop the BIG EAST with her performance this weekend.
Among the event winners were Nyla Henderson in the seeded 400 meters with a time of 56.31, Naiara Garcia-Moreno in the women's mile with a time of 4:52.07 and Linn Hertz Saebbo, who took the top spot in the invitational long jump with a mark of 5.81 meters (19 feet, 0.75 inches).
Multiple student-athletes recorded top-10 marks in the BIG EAST. Newcomer Kettia Ambrose wasted no time making her presence felt, running 56.12 seconds in the invitational 400 meters to rank seventh in the conference. Ryana Dennis' time of 25.11 seconds in the seeded 200 meters sits fifth in the league.
In the field, Ashley Sadler cleared 1.63 meters (5 feet, 4.25 inches) for a ninth-place finish in the invitational high jump. The clearance ranks sixth in the BIG EAST. Jamora Alves notched two top 10 marks with a toss of 16.26 meters (53 feet, 4.25 inches) in the weight throw to claim eighth in the invitational section. The Guyana product also placed third in the invitational shot put, registering a season-best 14.70 meters (48 feet, 2.75 inches) to rank second in the league.
Rounding out the action for the Johnnies was the distance medley relay team of Garcia-Moreno, Jalen Jackson, Leilani Robinson and Attoya Harvey. The quartet placed third with a time of 12:18.51, ranking 19th in NCAA Division I. The 4x400-meter relay of Haugen, Jackson, Ambrose and Henderson stopped the clock in 3:41.73 to take second.
The Red Storm return to action on Friday, Jan. 30, at Ocean Breeze as Director of Track and Field Aliann Pompey and company aim to capture their fourth consecutive Metropolitan Indoor Championship.
