Baseball Drops a Pair of Contests in Florida

The Red Storm will conclude its weekend against hosts Stetson tomorrow
DeLand, Fla. – St. John's baseball team dropped both games of its doubleheader on Saturday, falling to Minnesota, 8-0, and to Ball State, 8-2.
The Red Storm (0-3) registered 15 hits across both games, with Jon LeGrande and Shaun McMillan collecting three hits apiece.
Game One
Minnesota defeated St. John's, 8-0, in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader.
LeGrande led the Johnnies offensively, going 2-for-4 with a stolen base in game one. McMillan, Ayden Frey and Dylan Fitzsimmonseach notched a hit apiece.
The St. John's offense put two runners on in the bottom of the first but failed to bring anyone home. Minnesota (2-0) used a pair of doubles to knock in three runs in the top of the second.
After the second frame, Evan Chaffee held the Golden Gophers without a run over his final 2.2 innings. Dylan Johnson came on to relieve Chaffee in the fifth with runners in scoring
position, but forced a flyout to end the threat.
Minnesota hit a solo homer in the seventh plating four insurance runs in the eighth.
Game Two
Ball State jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in an 8-2 win over St. John's Saturday.
McMillan, Lewis Rodriguez and Rob Mansour each recorded two hits in the day's contest. LeGrande, Fitzsimmons, Adam Agresti and Jayder Raifstanger all contributed with a hit
apiece, as the Red Storm tallied 10 hits on the game.
Ian Mowad had a strong showing in relief, going 5.2 innings of one-run ball. The right-hander struck out three and forced nine groundouts.
Ball State struck hanging three runs in the first and third innings.
In the home half of the third, St. John's loaded the bases from singles from Mansour and Raifstanger and a walk from McMillan, but were unable to capitalize.
After the Cardinals added a run in the top of the fifth frame, the Johnnies broke through in the home half. Rodriguez triple before coming home on LeGrande groundout for St. John's first run of the contest.
St. John's added it's final run in the home half of the seventh. After drawing a walk, Chaz Wright took second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a groundout before Rodriguez brought him home with an RBI single.
Ball State added another run in the top of the ninth, capping the scoring at 8-2.
St. John's concludes its time in Florida tomorrow against Stetson. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. inside Melching Field at Conrad Park.
