Red Storm record largest margin of victory since March 29, 2006
HAMDEN, Conn. – Noah Plenn propelled the St. John's lacrosse team to a dominant performance on Tuesday afternoon, cruising past Quinnipiac, 20–8, in Connecticut.
The victory marked the program's largest margin of victory since March 29, 2006, when the Red Storm defeated Wagner, 16-4 in Queens.
Plenn etched his name into the St. John's record book, posting the highest point total by a freshman since the program's reinstatement in 2005. The redshirt freshman delivered a standout performance against the Bobcats, tallying five goals on nine shots on goal while adding three assists.
Reigning BIG EAST Rookie of the Week Chase Huggard continued his impressive stretch, finishing with four goals on the afternoon. Adrian Nowak extended both his point streak to 18 games and his goal-scoring streak to eight adding a tally. Mitch Campbell and Ryan Ormond each added two goals to help power the Red Storm to the decisive victory.
The Bobcats tied the score at five with 5:19 to go in the second quarter. From that point on the Johnnies outscored the Bobcats, 15-3.
St. John's opened the contest with a defensive test, as the Red Storm were called for a hold just 18 seconds into play. Goalkeeper Matt Nelson and the Johnnies' man-down unit answered the challenge, turning aside two Bobcat shot attempts to successfully kill off the penalty and keep the game scoreless. Just over two minutes later, Jake Wright broke the deadlock at the 12:44 mark, giving St. John's an early 1-0 advantage. Later in the opening frame, Plenn ignited the offense, rifling a shot into the top corner to extend the Red Storm lead to 2-0 and force a Quinnipiac timeout. The momentum remained firmly with St. John's, as just 47 seconds later, Huggard found the back of the net to push the advantage to 3-0. Quinnipiac scored twice in the final 2:57, including a goal with four seconds remaining, to cut the deficit to 3–2 at the end of the first quarter.
Quinnipiac wasted no time to open the second quarter, scoring just 13 seconds in to even the game at 3-3. The Red Storm answered immediately, as Ormond restored the lead 25 seconds later with a top-shelf finish. The Waxhaw, N.C., native struck again at the 9:58 mark, pushing the advantage to 5-3 and capping a quick offensive response from the Johnnies. The Bobcats scored the next two goals to tie the score, 5-5, forcing a Red Storm timeout. Out of the break, Wade Bryan delivered an immediate spark, scooping the faceoff, racing the length of the field and finishing to put the Red Storm back in front, 6-5. Huggard extended the lead two minutes later, netting his second goal of the day to give St. John's a 7-5 advantage heading into the half.
St. John's opened the second half with immediate momentum, Plenn continued his dominant performance by powering through the defense and scoring at the 13:20 mark to give the Red Storm a three-goal lead. Quinnipiac responded just 10 seconds later to trim the deficit, but the Johnnies answered right back, winning the ensuing faceoff that led to a finish from Campbell to restore the three-goal advantage.
At the 12:27 mark, St. John's earned a man-up opportunity, and Plenn converted less than a minute later for his second goal of the quarter, pushing the lead to four. The attackman stayed red-hot, completing a three-goal stretch in just three minutes to fuel a commanding run for the Red Storm. Huggard followed with his third goal of the game just over a minute later, extending the advantage to six. Justin Turri's squad continued to apply pressure, as freshman Owen Rogers found the back of the net for his second goal of the season. The teams traded possessions over the final six minutes of the quarter before Brody Hergott capped the period with a goal in the final seconds, sending St. John's into the fourth quarter with a 14-7 lead. The Red Storm outscored Quinnipiac, 7-2, in the third stanza.
After a seven-goal third quarter, St. John's carried its momentum into the final frame as Huggard netted his fourth goal of the game off a feed from Plenn, who recorded his third assist of the afternoon. The Red Storm continued to pour it on, with Campbell ripping home his second goal of the day at the 11:06 mark. Just over a minute later, captain Adrian Nowak found the back of the net to extend his goal-scoring streak, Plenn answered with his 10th goal of the season at the 7:25 mark, maintaining the offensive surge for the Red Storm. Following a six-minute stretch of scoreless play, Jack McCormack recorded the first goal of his collegiate career. Just nine seconds later, Ryan Farron followed suit, notching his first career goal to extend the St. John's advantage to 12, 20-8, to secure a Red Storm road victory.
