St. John’s Takes Down VCU on Friday

The Red Storm off to hot start improving to 6-1
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team earned a decisive 4-0 victory over VCU on Friday afternoon at Cunningham Park.
With the win over the 2025 NCAA Tournament participants, the Johnnies improved to 6-1 on the season and extended their winning streak to three.
In doubles play, the duo of Adam Groves and Semen Agynskyy set the tone with a commanding 6-1 victory over Patrik Petera and Kostiantyn Mantach on the No. 3 court. Armando Sotelo and Taichi Wakamatsu followed with an identical 6-1 result against Erwann Bouchet and Mats Bredschneijder on the No. 1 court to secure the doubles point for St. John's.
Leading 1-0, Agynskyy carried his strong play into singles competition, defeating Bouchet in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, to give St. John's a 2-0 advantage. The Red Storm continued to build momentum on the No. 2 court, where David Petrovic rallied after dropping the opening set to secure a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Nicolo Consonni.
Radomir Tomic clinched the match for the Johnnies with a hard-fought three-set win over Bredschneijder on the No. 5 court, bouncing back from a first-set deficit to prevail, 0-6, 6-3, 6-2.
With the victory, St. John's evens the all-time series at 2-2 dating back to 2012.
Sunday's match against Penn was postponed due to inclement weather. The Quakers and Red Storm will now meet on March 25 in Philadelphia, with first serve time to be announced at a later
date.
Following the win, the Red Storm will travel to The Rock and Roll Capital of the World to take on Cleveland State on Feb. 27. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
