The redshirt sophomore collected his third two-run homer in as many games
QUEENS, N.Y. – On a 3-2 pitch, Adam Agresti delivered a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the St. John's baseball team to a 3-1 victory over Marist on Wednesday afternoon. The redshirt sophomore has a two-run shot in each of the last three games at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
With the teams locked into a pitcher's duel, the Red Storm (5-11) used a fantastic outing from its bullpen to keep the Red Foxes (2-12) at bay.
Agresti once again led the way offensively, going 2-for-4 from the plate with a single and the two-run walk off homer. Dylan Fitzsimmons extended his on-base streak to a season-high eight games with a double in the bottom of the ninth. Shaun McMillan, Will Cowanand Jayder Raifstanger each notched a hit for the Johnnies.
After a slow start in the first inning, Brady Clark had an efficient day on the mound, going 5.0 innings of one-run ball and allowing just one hit as the starter. Nick Romer made his collegiate debut and went 2.0 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. Tyler Longoria picked up his first save of the season, striking out five over 2.0 frames of scoreless relief.
With a runner on and two outs, the Red Foxes used three walks to plate the first run of the contest. Clark would settle in and not allow another run through the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the fifth frame, the Johnnies broke through with a two-out rally. After Lewis Rodriguez worked a walk and Jon LeGrande got aboard on catcher's interference, Raifstanger lined a ball into center field to score Rodriguez. The Red Foxes worked their out of the inning with the game knotted at 1-1.
In the top of the eighth inning, Marist threatened with the bases loaded and no outs. Longoria came in and shut down the Red Foxes with a pair of strikeouts and a flyout to end the frame.
During crunch time, Fitzsimmons worked a leadoff double to represent the game-winning run. Agresti's heroics sealed the deal with his team-leading fifth home run to secure the victory, 3-1.
St. John's now starts a seven-game road trip over the next 11 days, heading down to face Charlotte in a three-game series starting on Friday at 6 p.m.
