Agresti sets career high six RBIs and two homers in Red Storm win over 49ers
The Red Storm (6-11) used a fantastic outing from starting pitcher Liam O'Leary and big offensive efforts from Adam Agresti and Shaun McMillan to snap Charlotte's (12-5) four-game winning streak.
Agresti stayed red-hot at the plate, launching a two-run homer in the top of the sixth before adding a three-run blast in the eighth to give the Red Storm a decisive edge and extend a four-game home run streak. The redshirt sophomore drove in six of St. John's eight runs, setting career highs with six RBIs and finishing 2-for-3 on the day. McMillan also contributed with a two-RBI double in the sixth inning. Jon LeGrandemade his presence felt on the basepaths, swiping two bases and scoring three of the Johnnies' runs.
On the mound, O'Leary turned in six innings of impressive work, striking out five and allowing just one earned run to secure his first win of the season. Jack Nestler and Victor Frederick both appeared in relief in the contest, with Frederick notching his first save.
After three scoreless innings in a tight pitching duel between O'Leary and Charlotte's Eddie Copper, the Johnnies broke through in the top of the fourth. Agresti brought LeGrande home with a sacrifice fly to give St. John's the early lead, 1-0.
Charlotte threatened in the bottom half, placing two runners on and sending a single into shallow left field. The 49ers tried to score from second, but Dylan Fitzsimmons delivered a perfect throw from the outfield to Agresti at the plate, who applied the tag to end the inning and preserve the lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Charlotte plated its first run when Spencer Nolan drove in a run with an RBI single to knot the contest at 1-1.
St. John's responded with a big rally in the sixth. McMillan lined a two-RBI double to right-center, scoring LeGrande and Jayder Raifstanger, before Agresti followed with a two-run homer to extend the Red Storm lead to 5-1.
Charlotte answered in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single, trimming the deficit to 5-2.
Agresti added key insurance runs in the top of the eighth, launching a 424-foot three-run home run over the left-field wall, his seventh of the season, to make it 8-2.
Charlotte mounted a late comeback in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs to cut the deficit to 8-6.
The Red Storm bullpen held strong and fended off a late push from the 49ers, as Frederick struck out two batters in the closing moments to preserve the win.
St. John's continues the series at Charlotte with game two starting on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Hayes Stadium.
