The Red Storm ride a three-game win streak into series finale against the 49ers
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The St. John's baseball team took the series victory over Charlotte, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at Hayes Stadium.
Early runs in a tight, low-scoring game helped the Red Storm (7-11) pull ahead to take the series win over Charlotte (12-6). Behind a standout performance from starting pitcher Evan Chaffee and closer Dylan Johnson, as well as key offensive contributions from Adam Agresti and Jon LeGrande, the Johnnies managed to hold off the 49ers.
Agresti continued his hot streak, blasting a two-run homer for the fifth straight game while finishing 1-for-2 at the plate. LeGrande also played a major role offensively, going 3-for-4 and delivering the go-ahead RBI in the top of the seventh inning.
On the mound, Chaffee turned in six solid innings, striking out three and allowing just two runs to take the win on the afternoon. Evan Hoeckele added 1.1 innings of relief, while Thomas Harding made a brief appearance out of the bullpen. Johnson then entered in the eighth inning and finished the game to secure his second save of the season.
The Red Storm struck first in the opening inning when Agresti launched a 415-foot two-run homer over the left-field wall to give his team an early advantage.
Charlotte responded in the second inning with a solo home run from Dawson Bryce, then evened the score at two in the third when Robert Nedry lined an RBI single up the middle.
Chaffee settled in after that, preventing the 49ers from scoring over the next three innings and keeping the game tied. The Johnnies regained the lead in the seventh when Rob Mansour scored from second on LeGrande's RBI single into left-center field.
Charlotte threatened in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases with one out when Johnson entered the game. The Red Storm defense came through in the clutch, recording the second out on a fielder's choice from Johnson to Agresti at home before Dylan Fitzsimmons secured the final out with a fly ball to right field, ending the inning and preserving the lead.
Ayden Frey reached base with a single through the left side in the top of the ninth and later stole second, but the Red Storm were unable to bring him home, ending their final offensive opportunity. In the bottom half of the inning, Charlotte moved the potential tying run into scoring position. However, the Red Storm defense held firm, and Johnson sealed the 3-2 victory and series win for St. John's over the 49ers with a swinging strikeout to end the game.
St. John's will close out the series at Charlotte with the final game on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Hayes Stadium.
