QUEENS, N.Y. –The St. John's baseball team will travel to Penn State for a midweek road tilt beginning on Tuesday in University Park, Pa.

This past weekend, St. John's (1-9, 0-0 BIG EAST) continued its early-season road slate with a three-game series at No. 22 Kentucky in Lexington, Ky.
In the series opener on Feb. 27, the Red Storm fell to the Wildcats, 3-1, in a tightly contested matchup. St. John's limited Kentucky to just six hits and worked out of multiple early jams behind Liam O'Leary before the Wildcats pushed across the decisive runs late.
On Feb. 28, the Johnnies dropped another close contest, 3-0. Despite St. John's putting runners on base in all but one inning, Kentucky broke through in the bottom of the seventh after a pair of errors. Evan Chaffee pitched 6.2 innings of one-run ball, while Dylan Fitzsimmonswent 3-for-4 with a trio of singles. Cristian Bernardini delivered a two-out pinch-hit double in the ninth to spark a late push that ultimately fell short.
St. John's closed the series on Mar. 1 with a 3-1 loss in the finale. Kentucky scored in each of the first three innings, but the Red Storm battled back across the final frames behind Shaun McMillan, who went 2-for-3 with a single and a double.
As a team, the Johnnies have posted a .977 fielding percentage, a mark that ranks second in the conference and 75th nationally. On the mound, Conor Burns ranks fourth in the conference in saves with one so far this season.
Lewis Rodriguez leads the BIG EAST and ranks 67th nationally in triples. Jon LeGrande is second in the conference and among the top 100 nationally in stolen bases, averaging 0.60 per game. Fitzsimmons is hitting .424, good for third in the league.
For the first time this season, Chaffee was recognized by the BIG EAST on the Weekly Honor Roll (Mar. 2). Chaffee took the mound for game two of the three-game series against No. 22 Kentucky, pitching 6.2 innings, striking out four batters on 93 pitches, and allowing just one earned run for a 1.35 ERA in the outing. Through 10 games this season, the Hamburg, N.Y., native has made three starts and logged 16.1 innings with a 3.86 ERA for the Johnnies, leading the pitching staff with 12 strikeouts while holding opposing hitters to a .266 batting average.
St. John's and Penn State (3-6, 0-0 Big Ten) are set to meet for the 25th time in a series that dates back to 1949 and stands as the Red Storm's longest active matchup against a Big Ten opponent. The Johnnies have won four of the last five meetings, highlighted by an 18-4 victory in their most recent clash on Feb. 25, 2018, in Cary, N.C. In that game, former Johnnie and current St. John's assistant coach, John Valente, recorded a hit to extend his 10-game hitting streak and drove in a run for the then-No. 23 Red Storm. All-time in University Park, the two sides are even at 4-4, though St. John's swept its last trip there on April 14, 1984, claiming both ends of a twin bill, 5-4 and 2-0.
Penn State enters the matchup, bouncing back after dropping the first two games of three against Indiana State over the weekend. The Nittany Lions dropped the series opener, 8-5, surrendering the deciding runs in the ninth inning, and fell 2-1 in a tightly contested second game. Penn State responded in the finale, rallying for a dramatic 9-8 walk-off victory in the 11th inning, sealed on a fielder's choice.
As a team, Penn State Nittany Lions baseball ranks fourth in the Big Ten and 88th nationally in double plays per game, averaging 0.78. The Nittany Lions have turned eight double plays so far this season, providing a steady boost to their defensive efforts.
Dimond Loosli was named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award watch list after a strong campaign last season. The right-hander went 5-1 in 22 appearances for the Nittany Lions, recording 30 strikeouts with a 3.82 ERA while allowing just 14 earned runs across 33.0 innings. This year, Loosli has made four appearances, logging 6.0 innings. The senior owns a 1.50 ERA with six strikeouts and just one earned run allowed.
After its midweek series, St. John's returns to Jack Kaiser Stadium for its home opening weekend against UAlbany from Mar. 6-8.
