Red Storm travel to Marist tomorrow afternoon

QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team dropped its first midweek contest of the week to FDU, 12-5, on Tuesday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium.

The Knights (14-7, 8-1 NEC) jumped out to an early lead, but the Red Storm (9-14) kept it close through the middle innings before FDU broke the game open with a five-run eighth.

Adam Agresti led the Johnnies offensively, going 2-for-3 at the plate, including a 427-foot home run in the bottom of the second inning. The top of the order continued to produce, as Jon LeGrande, Jayder Raifstanger and Shaun McMillan each recorded a hit. Agresti, Will Cowan and Lewis Rodriguez all drove in a run.

Thomas Harding made his first collegiate start, going 3.0 innings while allowing three runs and striking out three. In relief, Brady Clark turned in a strong outing, tossing 2.2 innings of one-run ball on two hits with two strikeouts.

FDU opened the contest with a run in each of the first two innings.

St. John's responded in the bottom of the second with Agresti's long ball to deep left-center to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Knights tacked on another pair of runs across the third and fourth innings to extend their lead to 4-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, Agresti led off with a single before Dylan Fitzsimmons reached on a fielder's choice. Fitzsimmons advanced to second on a balk and moved to third on a passed ball before Cowan brought him home on a fielder's choice. In the fifth, Rodriguez was hit by a pitch to start the inning, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout before scoring on a passed ball to make it 4-3.

FDU pulled away with a five-run eighth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double. In the bottom half, the Johnnies loaded the bases with two outs, and LeGrande used an infield single to bring home a run, but the rally was cut short, 9-4.

The Knights added three more runs in the ninth. St. John's threatened again in the bottom of the inning with the bases loaded and two outs, but managed just one run to bring the final score to 12-5.

The Red Storm return to action tomorrow against Marist. First pitch from Heritage Financial Park is set for 3 p.m.
