Red Storm square off with the Great Danes for the first time since 2023
QUEENS, N.Y – The St. John's baseball team will begin its 2026 home slate this weekend, featuring a three-game set with UAlbany. First pitch from Jack Kaiser Stadium on Friday is set for 3 p.m. The following afternoon the game will start at 2 p.m. and Sunday's series finale is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Games one and three will air on ESPN+, while game two will be streamed on the Red Storm YouTube Channel. Marc Ernay will be on the call from Queens for all three contests.
This past weekend, St. John's continued its early-season road slate with a three-game series at then-No. 22 Kentucky in Lexington, Ky. and a single game against Penn State.
In the series opener on Feb. 27, the Red Storm fell to the Wildcats, 3-1, in a tightly contested matchup. St. John's limited Kentucky to just six hits and worked out of multiple early jams behind Liam O'Leary before the Wildcats pushed across the decisive runs late.
On Feb. 28, the Johnnies dropped another close contest, 3-0. Despite St. John's putting runners on base in all but one inning, Kentucky broke through in the bottom of the seventh after a pair of errors. Evan Chaffee pitched 6.2 innings of one-run ball, while Dylan Fitzsimmonswent 3-for-4 with a trio of singles. Cristian Bernardini delivered a two-out pinch-hit double in the ninth to spark a late push that ultimately fell short.
St. John's closed the series on March 1 with a 3-1 loss in the finale. Kentucky scored in each of the first three innings, but the Red Storm battled back across the final frames behind Shaun McMillan, who went 2-for-3 with a single and a double.
Against Penn State, the Johnnies fell 12-2 in seven innings. Despite the typical early March weather in central Pennsylvania, the Nittany Lions were hot from the start. Tommy Conley gave up four runs in the second inning as the home team grabbed the lead and never looked back. Adam Agresti and Lewis Rodriguez each notched RBIs.
Chaffee was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday for his efforts in game two of the Kentucky series. The Hamburg, N.Y., native has made three starts and logged 16.1 innings with a 3.86 ERA for the Johnnies. He leads the pitching staff with 12 strikeouts, and opposing hitters are batting just .266 against him.
Offensively, both Fitzsimmons and McMillan have proven to be the backbone of the St. John's line-up. In the early going, they are first and second on team in hits, respectively. Fitzsimmons has reached base safely in 10 out of 11 contests, while McMillan has reached in nine of 11.
The St. John's–UAlbany series dates back to 2004, with the Red Storm leading the all-time series 22-4. The Johnnies have won at least five or more straight games against the Great Danes on three separate occasions.
The last time Red Storm hosted the UAlbany was back on April 9, 2019. Trailing by two at the seventh inning stretch, St. John's plated three runs in the seventh and eighth innings to come out on top in tight 5-4 victory. The Johnnies have won six straight home contests over the Great Danes dating back to May 6, 2014. The most recent home loss was on April 16, 2013, falling 6-8.
UAlbany enters the weekend 0-7 following a pair of weekend road trip to Texas Tech and at the First Pitch Invitational in Greenville, S.C., against James Madison, Michigan State and Illinois. In its most recent contest, the Great Danes erased a four-run deficit to come within distance of Illinois but ultimately fell short.
The Great Danes were selected to finish fourth in the America East coaches' poll, after a trip to the semifinals in the conference tournament last spring.
As a team, UAlbany is still looking to find its rhythm both offensively and defensively. The Great Danes are averaging 3.57 runs per contest and have a team ERA of 9.60.
Dylan Banner and Levi McAllister represented UAlbany on the Preseason All-America East Team. With two appearances under his belt, the right-handed Banner has pitched 7.2 innings with seven earned runs. McAllister has made six starts to go along with four hits, a homer and four RBIs.
Following the weekend tilt, the Johnnies are scheduled to their first two home midweek contests, against Marist (March 10) and Fairfield (March 11). Both games are scheduled for 3 p.m. at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
