St. John’s Picks Up First Series Win of 2026 in 5-4 Victory over UAlbany

Red Storm aiming for first series sweep of 2026 tomorrow at 1 p.m.
QUEENS, N.Y – The St. John's baseball team secured its first series win of the 2026 season with a 5-4 victory over UAlbany at Jack Kaiser Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Despite the Great Danes (0-9) outhitting the Red Storm (3-10), St. John's was able to produce runs with timely hitting and aggressive base running.
Rob Mansour continued to drive in runs for the Johnnies, recording two RBIs while going 2-for-3 from the dish. Will Cowan uncorked a 349-foot solo shot in the bottom of the third inning for the first home run in Queens this season. Jon LeGrande and Shaun McMillan each recorded a hit and a run, with McMillan also notching an RBI. Adam Agresti drew two walks and scored two runs.
Evan Chaffee went 5.2 innings in his first game at home, allowing three earned runs on four hits while striking out five. Evan Hoeckele was lights out in relief, going 3.1 innings with two hits and five strikeouts.
UAlbany opened the scoring in the top of the second, scoring on a passed ball.
St. John's responded with a three-run rally in the bottom of the frame. Agresti worked a walk and advanced to third on a LeGrande single to put runners on the corners. McMillan knocked in Agresti and advanced LeGrande with a single to right field to knot the contest at 1-1 with no outs. Sean Britt moved the runners into scoring position, allowing Mansour to drive in
LeGrande and put McMillan 90 feet away from home. McMillan would score on a passed ball to make it 3-1.
In the bottom of the third, Cowan turned on a 1-0 pitch and drove the ball over the left-field wall to make it 4-1 Johnnies.
The Great Danes responded in the top of the fourth with a three-run shot off the bat of Logan Morris.
After a scoreless fifth inning, the Red Storm grabbed the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth. Agresti walked and LeGrande was hit by a pitch to start the inning. McMillan grounded into a fielder's choice to advance the runners into scoring position. Mansour knocked in his second run of the contest with a two-out single to give the Johnnies a 5-4 advantage.
Hoeckele came in and shut the door on the Great Danes over the final 3.1 innings, retiring the side with a strikeout to end the game.
