Red Storm wins longest game since 16 inning win over Maine in 2025
QUEENS, N.Y – In the bottom of the 15th inning, Sean Britt dropped a perfectly placed bunt down the first base line to walk off UAlbany and give the Johnnies a 2-1 victory in their home opener on Friday evening at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
With runners on the corners, Britt laid down a perfectly placed bunt down the first base line to score Dylan Fitzsimmons and snap Red Storm's seven game skid. The win marks the longest contest at home since Adam Agresti's walk-off two-run homer in the 16th inning to take down Maine, 7-5, on March 14, 2025.
The Johnnies (2-10) outhit the Great Danes (0-8) 11-9, with multi-hit games from Jayder Raifstanger, Jon LeGrande and Lewis Rodriguez. In his season debut, Will Cowan collected a
hit. Dylan Fitzsimmons, Ayden Frey and Rob Mansour also notched hits, with Mansour also registering his first RBI of the season.
Liam O'Leary turned in another dominate performance with 7.0 innings of one-run ball with a season-high eight punch outs. Jack Nestler and Victor Frederick combined for three hits and no runs through 7.2 innings of relief, before Tyler Longoria recorded his first win of the season with a decisive third of an inning.
After four scoreless innings, St. John's plated the game's first run in the bottom of the fifth. Frey singled and advanced to second on a throwing error, before an Agresti fly out to left field advanced Frey to third. Mansour then singled to left and brought home Frey for his first RBI of the season.
UAlbany would respond in the top of the seventh frame to knot the contest of 1-1. The score would remain tied for another six innings.
Both teams had opportunities to plate the go ahead, but none more significant than the Johnnies in the 13th. With two away, a trio of singles from Raifstanger, McMillan and LeGrande filled the bases to put the winning run just 90 feet away. The Great Danes worked out of the jam to continue to marathon contest.
Finally, in the bottom of the 15th Fitzsimmons used a leadoff single to jump start the St. John's offense. After a Cowan walk, Raifstanger advanced Fitzsimmons to third on a fielders choice. In his first at bat of the evening, Britt laid down the safety squeeze to score Fitzsimmons and seal the game, 2-1.
The Johnnies will battle UAlbany in the second game of the series tomorrow at 2 p.m.
