St. John’s Splits Matches in Fort Meyers

The Red Storm took down Mercer, 4-3 on Thursday before falling to FGCU on Friday
FORT MEYERS, Fla. – The St. John's men's tennis team wrapped up its Sunshine State road trip with a split, defeating Mercer, 4–3, before falling to Florida Gulf Coast, 4–1.
Following the two-match slate in Fort Myers, Dillon Pottish's squad moves to 10–2 on the season.
After dropping the doubles point in a hard-fought start, St. John's rallied with four singles victories to defeat Mercer, 4–3, on Thursday.
Following a loss on the No. 1 court, the duo of Adam Groves and Semen Agynskyy continued their strong run, defeating Aldaz Alviz and Davila Gasser, 6–2, to even the doubles matches. Mercer ultimately secured the point with a win on the No. 3 court.
Agynskyy quickly evened the overall score at one with a dominant 6–1, 6–1 victory over Alviz on the No. 3 court. The Bears briefly regained the lead before Sergej Zivkovic leveled the match at two with a 6–3, 6–2 win over Howell Burns on the No. 6 court.
Radomir Tomic then gave the Johnnies their first lead of the day, earning a 6–3, 7–5 triumph over Hod'Abalo Isak Padio on the No. 1 court. Mercer responded to tie the match at three, setting up a decisive contest on the No. 2 court. David Petrovic delivered the clincher for St. John's, defeating Nemanja Stefanovic in a three-set battle, 6–4, 4–6, 6–4, to seal the 4–3 victory.
In Friday's match against FGCU, the Red Storm opened the contest by securing the doubles point.
The Eagles claimed the first match on the No. 1 court before Raicevic and Tomic evened the score with a 6–3 victory over Mike Bunjes and Gustav Hasslegren on the No. 2 court. Agynskyy and Groves then clinched the doubles point, defeating Stefan Correra and Stavros Hadjivarnava, 6–4, on the No. 3 court to secure their second win of the Florida swing.
FGCU responded in singles play, winning four straight matches to claim the 4–1 victory.
Following the trip to the Sunshine State, the Red Storm will return to Queens to host BIG EAST foe, Creighton on March 13. First-serve from the USTA National Tennis Center is set for 1 p.m.
