QUEENS, N.Y – The St. John's baseball team completed the series sweep of UAlbany on Sunday afternoon in a 4-3 victory at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
The Johnnies (4-10) got their offense going early to put distance between themselves and the Great Danes (0-10) and used a strong outing from the bullpen to put the game away.
Adam Agresti led St. John's offensively, going 2-for-3 with a 432-foot two-run homer. Cristian Bernardini went 2-for-4 from the plate, collecting an RBI, a run and a pair of stolen bases. Shaun McMillan had a 1-for-2 day at the dish, drawing a walk and scoring a run. Rob Mansour went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Dylan Fitzsimmons reached base for the 13th time in 14 contests with a walk.
Ian Mowad collected his first win of the season, pitching 5.0 innings of one-run ball. Dylan Johnson notched his first save of the season, pitching 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.
After a scoreless first inning, the Johnnies opened the scoring in the bottom of the second frame. McMillan started the inning with a double to deep right field and scored on a Bernardini single, 1-0. After stealing second and advancing to third on a flyout, Bernardini scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Mansour to grow the St. John's advantage to 2-0.
The next inning, Will Cowan earned a walk but was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice from Jayder Raifstanger. Agresti turned on a pitch in the zone and sent it over the left-field wall for the longest home run of the young season to make it 4-0.
In the top of the sixth inning, UAlbany got on the board with a three-run homer off the bat of Logan Morris to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Johnson entered to relieve Thomas Harding and shut down the Great Danes over the final three innings. The right-hander worked out of a jam in the ninth inning to secure the first series sweep and first home series win of the year for the Red Storm.
St. John's is back in action for its first pair of midweek home games. Fairfield makes the trip to Queens on Tuesday and Marist follows for a game on Wednesday. Both games will start at 3 p.m. at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
