St. John’s Battles Past FDU for 4-3 Victory on Wednesday

Red Storm have won four of their last five matches
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team earned a hard-fought 4-3 victory over FDU (7-9, 4-1 NEC) on Wednesday afternoon at the USTA National Tennis Center.
With the win, the Red Storm improve to 13-5 overall and 4-1 in BIG EAST play, while claiming their fourth victory in the last five matches.
St. John's opened strong in doubles action, as Charlotta Buss and Giulia Bizzari secured a 6-2 win over Valentina Silva and Katsiaryna Kostsina on the No. 3 court. Noemi Babikova and Victoria Papadopoulou followed with a 6-2 triumph against Sophia Fredericks-McKee and Ann Kato on the No. 2 court to clinch the doubles point and give the Johnnies an early 1-0 lead.
Buss carried that momentum into singles play, earning a 7-6 (7), 6-4 victory over Silva on the No. 5 court. Nicoline Sartz-Lunde extended the St. John's advantage to 3-0 with a commanding 6-3, 6-2 win on the No. 4 court.
FDU responded by taking the next three singles matches to even the score at 3-3, setting up a decisive match on the No. 3 court.
Nao Kojima delivered in the clutch, rallying for a three-set comeback victory over Yelena Kim, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, to secure the 4-3 win for the Red Storm.
With the victory, St. John's improves to 9-1 all-time against FDU dating back to 2008.
The Red Storm will return to action on Saturday for a BIG EAST matchup against Seton Hall at the USTA National Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 1:45 p.m.
