Red Storm 4x400-meter relay to participate in the Championship of America section
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's track and field team is set to compete at one of the most historic and prestigious track and field meets in the world, the 130th Penn Relays. The competition, hosted by Penn, is the longest running track meet in America and held at historic Franklin Field.
The Red Storm are slated to compete against some of the NCAA's most elite student-athletes in several individual events, as well as the three relays in the Championship of America section.
On Tuesday, the 4x400-meter relay members Kettia Ambrose, Nyla Henderson, Leliani Robinson and Chinenye Josephine Onourah were named the BIG EAST Female Athletes of the Week for their impressive outing at the UConn Northeast Challenge last weekend.
The quartet ran a seasons-best time of 3-minutes, 35.36 seconds to secure one of two event wins for the Johnnies. The time currently sits first in the conference by nearly 10 seconds and the 19th best performance by a Division I "A" relay in the East Region this season.
The same relay is schedule to compete in the 4x400-meter relay Championship of America on Saturday. Additionally, Red Storm will participate in the 4x200-meter relay and the Sprint Medley Relay on Saturday.
Maddie Kelso-Heap will kick off the action for St. John's in the 400-meter hurdles on Thursday evening. The junior holds a season-best mark of 1:00.35 at the South Florida Invitational.
Also competing on Thursday night is sophomore standout Naiara Garcia-Moreno in the 1,500-meter run. She has finished first in all five races this outdoor season, with a 4:25.83 personal-best at the USF Alumni Invitational.
On Friday, Cassandra Lemus-Sodji and Jamora Alves will compete in the respective events. Lemus-Sodji returns to the runway for the long jump. The senior holds a season-best mark of 6.15m (20 feet, 2.50 inches) set at the USF Alumni Invitational. Alves is slated to start in the shot put and then the discus on Saturday. The senior set the Grenada national record in the discus at the Penn Relays in 2025 with a personal-best toss of 54.33m (178 feet, 3 inches).
Fia Viklund will round out the individual participants for the Johnnies, making her way to the triple-jump runway. The graduate student holds a season-best mark of 12.34m (40 feet, 6 inches) at the 2026 Metropolitan Outdoor Championships earlier this month.
Following the three days of competition, St. John's returns to Queens for the Tom Farrell Classic on Saturday, May 2. The program will celebrate the 16 members of its graduating class before the start of the meet.
