STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The St. John's softball team narrowly fell to Stony Brook, 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon at University Field on Long Island.
The Red Storm (27-20, 6-12 BIG EAST) plated three runs on 11 hits in the contest. Natasha Limbani led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance at the dish, scoring once and driving in a run, while Ana Serafinko added two hits and an RBI. Jess Bianco and Elanna Lysiak each recorded two hits in the setback.
Fresh off an appearance on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, Limbani recorded her second consecutive multi-hit performance and second three-hit showing in six days. The junior reached the three-hit mark for the third time this year, tying a season-high.
St. John's wasted no time getting on the board in the opening frame. Bianco led off with a single and stole second, before Limbani lined an RBI single to bring her home. Serafinko followed with a double off the right field wall to plate Limbani and give the Johnnies an early 2-0 advantage. The Red Storm tallied four hits in the inning and put runners on second and third but could not extend the lead further.
In the circle, Loreley Francia began the contest by retiring the first eight batters she faced through 2 2/3 innings before Stony Brook (17-24, 8-10 CAA) evened the score in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run home run.
The Johnnies responded in the fifth to reclaim the lead. Limbani singled to open the inning and later scored after advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt from Lysiak and crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly from Cassidy Stouffer to make it 3-2.
Stony Brook answered in the bottom half of the frame, utilizing a two-out, game-winning two-run home run to pull ahead, 4-3.
St. John's threatened late, putting runners on base in both the sixth and seventh innings. Lysiak recorded a two-out single in the final frame, but the Red Storm was unable to bring across the tying run.
Avery Neuman and Makenna Meadows combined to toss the final inning, with Meadows stranding the bases loaded to keep the deficit at one.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, Lysiak singled through the right side, but the Red Storm were unable to bring the tying run to the plate and ultimately fell, 4-3.
