St. John’s to Face Xavier for Three-Game Weekend Series

Red Storm and the Musketeers will face off for the first time this season
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team will travel to Xavier for a three-game series starting on Friday afternoon at Hayden Field.
Game one on Friday is set for 2 p.m. Saturday's contest will begin at 2 p.m. and the series finale will start at 12 p.m. in Cincinnati. All three games will be available to watch on Xavier+ and live stats can be found on RedStormSports.com.
St. John's (21-19, 7-2 BIG EAST) has been red hot as of late, winners of 11 in its last 13 games. On Tuesday, the Johnnies earned a 10-5 midweek victory at Rutgers, overcoming an early deficit with a pair of three-run innings and pulling away late in the ninth to secure its first win over a Big Ten opponent this season.
The Red Storm were powered offensively by Lewis Rodriguez, Shaun McMillan and Cristian Bernardini, who each tallied two hits and two RBIs, while Ayden Frey added an RBI and Sean Britt reached base twice and scored two runs.
After a short start from Nick Gilpin, the bullpen was dominant, allowing just one run on two hits across seven innings, with Thomas Harding, Nick Romer and Kyle Chase each tossing a
hitless frame to help seal the win.
St. John's earned multiple BIG EAST Weekly Honors for the third straight week, with Liam O'Leary named Pitcher of the Week and Rodriguez landing on the Honor Roll. O'Leary threw a complete-game shutout against UConn, while Rodriguez hit .500 with three runs, three RBIs and two steals on the week, helping power a series victory.
Following last weekend's series victory over UConn, St. John's moved into second place in the BIG EAST standings. The Red Storm ranks second in the conference with a .974 fielding percentage and 77th nationally. At the plate, St. John's ranks in the top half of the league in batting average and RBIs and sit second in the conference with 68 stolen bases.
Individually, O'Leary ranks second in the BIG EAST with a 2.57 ERA and 54th in the NCAA Division I ranks, while owning the conference's only two nine-inning complete games. Adam
Agresti is second in the league with 14 home runs and sits 29th nationally.
St. John's and Xavier (19-23, 9-3 BIG EAST) will face off for the 41st time, with the series dating back to 2014. Red Storm holds a 22-18 edge in the all-time series, with an 8-4 record in Cincinnati. The Johnnies faced Xavier last season and swept the Musketeers in Queens.
Xavier dropped an 11-1 decision to Vanderbilt in eight innings on Tuesday in Nashville. Clay Burdette provided the lone highlight with a first-inning solo home run, his team-leading 13th, but Vanderbilt responded with three runs in the bottom half and never looked back. On the mound, Xavier used multiple arms to combine for 12 strikeouts while Owen Poole and Eli Bridenthal both put in hitless stints on the bump.
After sweeping Seton Hall over the weekend, Xavier moved into third place in the BIG EAST standings. The Musketeers rank second in the league with 50 home runs, sitting 67th nationally, averaging just over one round tripper per outing. They also sit third in the conference with 359 hits and have turned 27 double plays on the defensive end.
Burdette leads the BIG EAST with a .382 batting average and ranks 49th in Division I. He also ranks second in the conference with 14 doubles. On the mound, Ryan Piech paces the league with 12.29 strikeouts per nine innings and leads the conference with six wins this season.
