Red Storm conclude its eight-game road swing at Hofstra on Tuesday
Despite jumping out to an early lead, the Red Storm (23-20, 9-3 BIG EAST) fell victim to the Musketeers long ball. The Johnnies won the first two games of the three-game set, marking four straight series victories to open conference play.
Offensively, St. John's was led by Cristian Bernardini who recorded his second three-run home run in as many games and Shaun McMillan who went 2-for-3 with a single, a solo
homer and three runs. Ayden Frey went 1-for-2 with a single, a walk and an RBI. Will Cowan also recorded an RBI single.
St. John's broke through in the top of the first. After Jayder Raifstanger and McMillan each reached, Cowan laced a ball to left center to score Raifstanger from second. Frey followed with an RBI single to left center and brought around McMillan to make it 2-0.
Xavier (20-25, 10-5 BIG EAST) erased the lead completely in the bottom of the second, putting up six runs to make it 6-2.
The Musketeers added to their advantage in the third and fifth innings, tallying nine runs to go up 15-2.
The Johnnies chipped at the lead in the top of the sixth. McMillan got the inning started with a single to center field. Frey worked a two-out walk and Bernardini followed with a three-run homer, 15-5.
Xavier added another tally in the bottom half of the sixth, 16-5.
Red Storm needed at two runs to avoid the run-rule but only plated one of McMillan's solo shot to bring the score to the 16-6 final.
St. John's will wrap up its eight-game road swing on Tuesday at Hofstra. First pitch from University Field is set for 3 p.m.
