Red Storm sweep Hofstra in season series
The Red Storm (24-20, 9-3 BIG EAST) notched double-digit hits for the fifth time in seven games. This marked the second game this season that the Johnnies collected 12 RBIs, trailing the season-high of 14 at Seton Hall during game two of the April 4 doubleheader.
There was plenty of offense to go around, with Jayder Raifstanger hitting the first grand slam of the year for St. John's in the fourth inning. It marked the first grand slam since teammate Sean Britt had one against Villanova on April 10, 2025. The Great Barrington, Mass., native went 3-for-3 with a single, a double and the grand slam, adding five RBIs and three runs to his line against the Pride (15-23, 9-12 CAA).
Shaun McMillan, Adam Agresti and Dylan Fitzsimmons all went yard, as Agresti added to his team-leading 16th big fly of the season. Freshman Declan Spooner notched his first collegiate hit in the fourth inning, finishing 2-for-3.
Opener Joe Mascio made his first appearance of the season, pitching a 1-2-3 inning to secure his first win of the campaign. Nick Gilpin followed with 4.0 innings of two-run ball, fanning two, and Brady Clark continued his strong form, tossing a scoreless inning. Evan Hoeckele came in to throw
St. John's opened the scoring three batters into the game. Following a Raifstanger walk, McMillan launched a two-run shot to center field to make it 2-0.
The Johnnies used a three-run rally in the third to extend the lead. Jon LeGrande was plunked to start the inning and made his way to third on a wild pitch and a stolen base. Raifstanger doubled to bring him in. With one out, Agresti unloaded a two-run blast to left field to make it 5-0.
Spooner started the top of the fourth with a single, followed by base hits from Rob Mansour and Lewis Rodriguez. With the bases loaded and one out, Raifstanger turned on a 2-1 pitch and sent it over the fence for the first grand slam of the season, making it 10-0.
Hofstra got on the board in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff solo homer, 10-1.
In the next inning, Fitzsimmons joined the home run barrage with a solo shot off the scoreboard to make it 11-1.
The Pride again used a leadoff blast in the bottom of the fifth to chip at the lead, 11-2.
In the top of the sixth, LeGrande singled and Raifstanger was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. With one out, Agresti doubled to right field to score LeGrande from second and push the advantage back to 10 runs, 12-2.
Hofstra used a pair of four-run innings in the seventh and eighth to come within striking distance, 12-10.
Hoeckele tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning to keep the Pride off the board and secure the save.
St. John's turns its attention to the biggest series of the season, welcoming first-place Creighton to Queens. Game one on Friday is set for 3 p.m. at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
