The sophomore recorded his first career multi-home run game
The Red Storm (25-20, 10-3 BIG EAST) collected 12 hits as a team, marking the fifth time in the last six games the team has recorded double-digit hits.
The offense used home runs from McMillan and Cristian Bernardini to grow a sizeable advantage over the Bluejays (25-18, 10-3) BIG EAST). McMillan went 3-for-4 from the dish with a three-run and solo homer, a single, four RBIs and two runs. Bernardini finished the outing 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and solo blast. Five other Johnnies collected hits.
On the mound, Liam O'Leary turned in 6.0 innings of one-run ball and fanning seven to take the win (6-3). Victor Frederick came in and pitched 3.0 innings of two-run ball and striking out three to earn his fourth save of the season.
Creighton got on the board first in the top of the second on a solo home run to make it 1-0.
In the bottom of the third, St. John's responded with a five-run rally to take the lead for good. Bernardini opened the frame with double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Rob Mansour. Lewis Rodriguez singled to score Bernardini to knot the contest at 1-1. Rodriguez stole second and Jon LeGrande earned a walk to put runners on first and second. Jayder Raifstanger singled through the left side to plate Rodriguez and gave the Johnnies a 2-1 edge. McMillan sent a ball 425 feet over the left-center field wall for his first home run of the afternoon, 5-1.
McMillan added to his home run total with a 387-foot solo blast to make it 6-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Ayden Frey started a rally with a double, as Mansour was plunked to put runners on first and second. Dylan Fitzsimmons turned on the first ball he saw with a pinch-hit double to score Frey and advance Mansour to third. LeGrande brought both runners home with a double off the left-center field wall to make it 9-1.
The Bluejays added a run in the top of the eighth, but St. John's answered with a 385-foot Bernardini solo blast in the bottom half of the frame, 10-1.
Creighton managed to get one run across in the top of the ninth, but Frederick induced a double play to help the Johnnies take game one of the series.
St. John's will battle again with Creighton tomorrow, aiming for the series win and to jump the Bluejays in the BIG EAST standings for first place. First pitch from Jack Kaiser Stadium is set for 2 p.m.
