The Red Storm and the Bluejays are set to clash for critical BIG EAST series
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team will host Creighton this weekend for a three-game series between the top two teams in the BIG EAST.
The duel for the top spot in the league standings begins on Friday at Jack Kaiser Stadium with a 3 p.m. first pitch. Saturday's contest will begin at 2 p.m. and the series finale will start at 11 a.m. in Queens. All three games will be available to watch on ESPN+.
The Johnnies are challenging St. John's fraternities and sororities to "Pack The Jack" this weekend. The organization that brings the most members across the weekend will get a chance to take batting practice at Jack Kaiser Stadium next week. Fans can also pick up their very own Red Storm baseball hat during the third inning of Friday and Saturday's games.
St. John's (24-20, 9-3 BIG EAST) rode a power surge to complete a season sweep of Hofstra with a 12-10 win on Tuesday afternoon. The Red Storm blasted four home runs to tie a season-high while piling up double-digit hits for the fifth time in seven games. Jayder Raifstanger led the charge with a 3-for-3 performance that included a grand slam, five RBIs and three runs scored while Shaun McMillan, Adam Agresti and Dylan Fitzsimmons also went deep. On the mound, Joe Mascio earned the win in his season debut, Nick Gilpin provided four solid innings in relief, and Evan Hoeckele shut the door with a 1-2-3 ninth to secure the victory.
On Monday, St. John's earned multiple BIG EAST Weekly Honors for the fourth straight week, as Nick Romer and Ayden Frey landed on the Honor Roll for the first time in their careers. Romer contributed out of the bullpen with 3.1 strong innings over three appearances, allowing just one run and earning his first collegiate win. In four games, Frey went 8-for-18 (.400) with eight hits, five runs, three doubles and five RBIs. The pair's efforts helped the team to a midweek win over Rutgers and the series victory at Xavier.
Following last weekend's series victory over Xavier, St. John's remains in second place in the BIG EAST standings. The Red Storm has won all four of its conference series, sweeping Seton Hall to open league action and taking two of three against Georgetown, UConn, and Xavier, the last two of which were on the road. After starting the season with a 1-10 record against a loaded schedule including the likes of Arizona State and Kentucky, the Johnnies have bounced back with a 23-10 record over their last 33 games, including a seven-game winning streak from March 31 to April 11.
The Johnnies have scored seven or more runs in eight of their 12 conference games and the team is slashing .329/.421/.510 in league action. Six of the Red Storm's everyday starters are hitting .313 or better in BIG EAST play, with two, Lewis Rodriguez (.425) and Agresti (.404), hitting north of .400.
After playing three of its first four BIG EAST series on the road, St. John's will return to The Jack, where it has won four of its last five and is 8-6 overall on the year.
Friday's starter, right-hander Liam O'Leary, carries a 3.00 ERA into the weekend, good enough for third in the conference among qualifying pitchers. He leads the league and is tied for fifth nationally with two nine-inning complete games, both of which have come against BIG EAST foes. He is 5-3 on the year with a 3-0 record against conference competition.
Offensively, Agresti has been a force for the Johnnies. He currently ranks 31st nationally with a .716 slugging percentage, a jump of more than 250 points from a season ago (.462). In conference play, the redshirt sophomore is slugging .872 with five homers and 12 RBIs in just 12 games. On the season, he ranks 26th nationally with 16 home runs, a total that is tied for second on the Red Storm's single-season record list with Mike Dzurilla (1999) and Chris Fallon (2000). He trails only Jeremy Baltz's school record of 24 round trippers set in 2010.
St. John's and Creighton (25-17, 10-2 BIG EAST) will face off for the 31st time in a series that dates back to 1991. The Bluejays hold a 25-15 advantage in the all-time series while the Red Storm own an 8-7 edge in Queens. Each of the last four series between St. John's and Creighton has resulted in a sweep.
On Tuesday in Omaha, Creighton dropped a 13-6 decision to North Dakota State in front of more than 10,000 fans. Rocco Gump led Creighton offensively with a 2-for-4 performance, including a two-run blast.
Coming off a weekend sweep of Butler, Creighton remains atop the BIG EAST standings with a league-best 10-2 record. After dropping the opening series of BIG EAST play at UConn, the Bluejays have swept their last three league opponents. In conference play, the Creighton pitching staff has compiled a 3.46 ERA while holding opponents to a .206 batting average.
In those 12 games, the Bluejays have struck out 105 batters while surrendering just 37 walks.
Following the weekend series, St. John's will remain home to host Stony Brook for Senior Day on Tuesday, May 5 at 3 p.m. at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
