Red Storm ride a four-game win streak into midweek match up with the Blue Devils
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team stays the road for non-conference midweek matchup with Central Connecticut State on Tuesday at CCSU Baseball Field in New Britain, Conn.
First pitch for Tuesday's contest is set for 3 p.m. Fans can tune into the game on NEC FrontRow and follow along with live stats on RedStormSports.com.
Adam Agresti was named BIG EAST Player of the Week honors after a standout performance in a 4-0 week, slashing .421/.500/.947 while going 8-for-19 with eight runs scored, a double, three home runs, four RBIs and two stolen bases. Liam O'Leary earned a BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll nod following his complete-game effort against Seton Hall, where he struck out eight and allowed just two runs in an 8-2 win.
This marks the first time that two Johnnies have appeared on the honor roll since May 5, 2025, when Jed Boyle was named pitcher of the week and Jon LeGrande made the honor roll. The pair are also the first battery to claim a player of the week and an honor roll spot since Ben Adams and Jimmy Keenan did so on Feb. 19, 2024.
Red Storm (14-17, 3-0 BIG EAST) opened BIG EAST play in dominant fashion, sweeping Seton Hall across three games behind strong pitching and explosive offense. The Red Storm took game one, 8-2, as O'Leary tossed the first complete game since 2022 with eight strikeouts, while battery mate Agresti powered the lineup with two home runs and three runs scored.
In Saturday's doubleheader, St. John's edged out a wild 13-12 victory before cruising to a 15-3 win to complete the sweep. The offense was highlighted by home runs from Agresti, Shaun McMillan, Dylan Fitzsimmons and Will Cowan. LeGrande led the charge across both contests, including a six-RBI performance with the first inside-the-park home run by a Johnnie since 2021. Lewis Rodriguez turned in a multi-hit effort. Saturday's starters Evan Chaffee and Ian Mowad delivered solid outings to secure the Johnnies' third straight conference-opening series sweep.
As a team, St. John's leads the BIG EAST with a .978 fielding percentage, ranking 42nd nationally. The bullpen has been a strength, posting a 1.56 WHIP and allowing just 9.08 hits per nine innings, both among the top marks in the conference.
Individually, O'Leary has anchored the starting rotation with a 2.79 ERA across eight starts, ranking second in the conference and 91st nationally, while also throwing the BIG EAST's only complete game, becoming the 12th player in the country to do so this season. Agresti is second in the BIG EAST with 12 home runs and ranks 22nd in Division I. He leads the team in 32 RBIs and a .704 slugging percentage that ranks fourth in the conference. Fitzsimmons sits second in the BIG EAST with two triples, placing him among the top 100 nationally.
St. John's and CCSU (8-13, 6-9 NEC) will face off for the 12th time, marking just the third meeting since 2015 and the fourth since 1975, in a series dating back to 1968. The Red Storm hold an 8-3 edge in the all-time series. Notably, the home team has won all 11 matchups, with St. John's sweeping all eight games in Queens and Central Connecticut taking all three in New Britain. The Johnnies have gone 3-2 in their last five meetings with the Blue Devils, including an 8-7 victory at home on March 26, 2025.
Central Connecticut went 1-2 in its NEC series against Wagner, opening with a 10-9 extra-inning victory before dropping the final two contests. In the opener, the Blue Devils rallied late behind RBIs from Nick Fox and Danny Witters, with Nico Christon earning the win in relief. Wagner evened the series with an 8-2 win on Friday, as Jacob Hines struck out seven over 5.2 innings and Fox, Gianno Merlonghi and Matt Graziose each contributed offensively, but CCSU was unable to overcome an early deficit. In the finale, Central's offense erupted for 13 runs and 15 hits, with Louis Jordan and Graziose each tallying three hits and multiple players driving in runs, but Wagner mounted a late comeback with a two-run ninth to force extras before pulling away for a 16-13 win in the 10th.
The Blue Devils have turned the only triple play recorded in NCAA Division I this season. At the plate, CCSU leads the NEC with 14 sacrifice bunts. Gabe Tanous paces both the team and the conference with four, while Frankie Ferrentino ranks among the toughest hitters to strike out, sitting fourth in the NEC with a 10.4 strikeout rate and 67th nationally.
Following the weekend series, St. John's will ready for its BIG EAST home opener against Georgetown. The three-game series with the Hoyas is set to start on Friday at 3 p.m. at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
