Dylan Fitzsimmons records season-high three doubles and four RBIs in Red Storm victory
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The St. John's baseball team cruised to a 9-1 victory at Central Connecticut State on Tuesday afternoon.
Freshman Dylan Fitzsimmons paced the Red Storm (15-17, 3-0 BIG EAST) offensively, picking up a key road win against the Blue Devils (8-14, 6-9 NEC).
Fitzsimmons had a season-best outing, going 3-for-4 with three doubles, two runs scored and four RBIs. Shaun McMillan also turned in a strong performance, finishing 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI. Jayder Raifstanger chipped in with a double and a run scored. Adam Agresti crossed the plate three times and Lewis Rodriguez swiped two bags.
On the mound, Thomas Harding picked up the win with 3.0 innings of one-run ball, striking out five. Brady Clark, Nick Gilpin, Tommy Conley and Kyle Chase combined for 7.0 scoreless innings of relief, adding four strikeouts.
The Red Storm got on the board in the first frame as Rodriguez drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a steal and a groundout. Agresti put the ball in play and reached on an error, allowing Rodriguez to score the game's first run. Agresti then stole second before Fitzsimmons lined a double down the left field line to bring him home and make it 2-0.
CCSU answered in the bottom half by capitalizing on an error, but Harding retired the next two batters to limit the damage and hold a 2-1 lead.
After a few quiet innings, the Red Storm broke things open in the fifth. Raifstanger led off with a double and came around to score on an RBI single from McMillan. Agresti was hit by a pitch to put another runner in scoring position, as Fitzsimmons delivered again with his second RBI double of the game. Ayden Frey added to the rally by scoring Agresti, later crossing the plate himself on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 6-1.
St. John's kept the pressure on in the sixth. McMillan opened the inning with a leadoff triple, and Agresti followed with a walk to put runners on the corners. Fitzsimmons drove in both with his third double of the game before advancing to third on a CCSU error to make it 8-1. Frey reached after being hit by a pitch, and Sean Britt ripped a pinch-hit single to center to score Fitzsimmons and push the lead to 9-1.
The Red Storm pitching staff and defense took care of the rest, shutting down CCSU the rest of the way to secure their fifth straight win, 9-1.
Following Tuesday's contest, St. John's will ready for its BIG EAST home opener against Georgetown. The three-game series with the Hoyas is set to start on Friday at 3 p.m. at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
