QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's track and field team is set to begin postseason competition this weekend at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships, presented by Jeep, at the George J. Sherman Athletic Complex in Storrs, Conn. Day one of the three-day event will start at 12 p.m. on Thursday.
The Red Storm finished in third place at last year's title meet, recording 143 points and three gold medals. Jamora Alves was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer for the second time in her storied career, winning the discus and placing second in the shot put. The Johnnies return 14 different point scorers from last year's meet.
Director of Track and Field Aliann Pompey's squad enters the postseason after a strong outdoor campaign that featured multiple conference-leading marks, a Metropolitan Outdoor Championship title and several NCAA East Regional qualifying performances. The Johnnies captured back-to-back Metropolitan Outdoor Championship team titles on April 3, totaling 207 points with 11 event victories and 24 podium finishes.
Heading into the weekend, St. John's has 20 student-athletes within the top eight of the league's descending list. Kettia Ambrose leads the way with three top-eight times, followed by Alves and Cassandra Lemus-Sodji with a pair of top-eight marks.
Senior Desiree Pagan will kick off the championship for the Johnnies in the hammer throw at 3 p.m. on Thursday. The Islip, N.Y., native ranks third in the BIG EAST with a mark of 52.76m (173 feet, 1 inch).
Friday features the preliminary rounds of most track events, except for the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 5,000-meter run, which will contest the finals that day. The trials and finals of the long jump and shot put will also take place.
The meet wraps up on Saturday with finals for all running events, including the 4x100-meter, 4x400-meter and 4x800-meter relays. Trials and finals for the discus, triple jump and high jump will also be contested. The award ceremony is scheduled to begin after the 4x400-meter relays at 3:15 p.m.
Following the BIG EAST Championship, should any student-athletes qualify, the NCAA East Regional Track and Field Championships will take place from May 27-30 in Lexington, Ky.
