The Red claimed the series victory over the Bluejays, the second time in three years

QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's baseball team (26-21, 11-4 BIG EAST) fell in a tight series finale to Creighton (26-19, 11-4 BIG EAST), 6-5, still coming away with the series win.

Jon LeGrande led the offense, going 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a stolen base. Adam Agresti drew a pair of intentional walks, his third and fourth against conference opponents, while also scoring a run alongside Will Cowan, Ayden Frey, Dylan Fitzsimmons and Rob Mansour.

On the mound, Evan Hoeckele got the start, allowing two runs over 2.2 innings with four strikeouts. Five relievers followed, with Ian Mowad and Tyler Longoria delivering scoreless outings and combining for five strikeouts.

Creighton struck first with an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead and added runs in the third and fourth innings to build a 4-0 advantage.

The Johnnies responded in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases before Cristian Bernardini drove in a run on an RBI groundout. LeGrande followed with a two-RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-3.

St. John's carried the momentum into the fifth, using a two-out rally to take the lead. With one aboard, Frey laced a ground-rule double to left center to tie the game, and Fitzsimmons delivered an opposite-field hit to bring him home for a 5-4 edge.

Creighton answered in the sixth with a game-tying run on a fielder's choice RBI and regained the lead in the eighth on a sacrifice fly RBI to make it 6-5.

Despite late pressure in the final two innings, the Red Storm were unable to complete the comeback, as the Bluejays held on to avoid the sweep. St. John's, however, claimed the series, winning two of three to remain atop the BIG EAST standings.

The Red Storm return to action on Tuesday to host Stony Brook for Senior Day at Jack Kaiser Stadium. The Senior Day ceremony will be held prior to the 3 p.m. first pitch.
