LeGrande named BIG EAST Player of the Week, O’Leary makes Weekly Honor Roll
NEW YORK – For the seventh consecutive week, the St. John's baseball team has been represented on the BIG EAST Baseball Weekly Honors. Jon LeGrande was selected as BIG EAST Player of the Week and Liam O'Leary earned a spot on the weekly honor roll, the league office announced on Monday.
This is the second weekly roll LeGrande has earned from the conference this year and the fourth honor for O'Leary, including a BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week selection on April 20.
LeGrande put together a standout week, starting all four games and playing a pivotal role in St. John's BIG EAST series win over Creighton. He slashed .471/.550/.824, going 8-for-17 with three doubles and a home run, while scoring seven runs, driving in nine and swiping three bases in four attempts.
Against Hofstra, he finished 2-for-4 with a double, three runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base to help secure the midweek victory.
In the series opener against Creighton on May 1, he went 1-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored in a 10-3 win. He followed with a dominant performance in game two on May 2, going 3-for-4 with a homer, a double, four RBIs, three runs scored and a walk. His RBI double in the sixth inning tied the game at three before he came around to score the go-ahead run on the next play. He later capped the 11-3 victory with a 400-foot, three-run homer to clinch the series for the Red Storm. In the finale, he added a 2-for-5 effort with two RBIs and a pair of stolen bases.
LeGrande leads the team and ranks second in the BIG EAST with 19 stolen bases.
In his 12th start of the season, O'Leary delivered another strong outing, allowing just one run over 6.0 innings. The junior struck out seven batters, his second-highest total in conference play, while throwing 110 pitches and facing 24 hitters. He surrendered only three hits in the 10-3 win.
O'Leary owns a 2.88 ERA this season, ranking second in the BIG EAST and 64th nationally. He is the only pitcher in the conference with two nine-inning complete games. The Souderton, Pa., native is tied for the league lead with six wins and 12 starts, while sitting third with a 1.14 WHIP and allowing just 2.19 walks per nine innings. He has recorded at least three strikeouts in eight of his 12 starts and has earned wins in four of five BIG EAST outings without taking a loss, striking out five or more in three of those appearances.
LeGrande, O'Leary and the Red Storm will host Stony Brook on Tuesday, for Senior Day at Jack Kaiser Stadium. The Senior Day ceremony will be held at 2:40 p.m. with first pitch on ESPN+ to follow at 3 p.m.
