April 23, 2005, Queens, NY - In its last home game of the season, the St. John's men's lacrosse team fell to ECAC rival Hobart College this afternoon 13-9, at DaSilva Memorial Field. The Red Storm fall to 2-10 (0-6 ECAC), while the Statesmen improve to 6-5 (2-3 ECAC).
The Red Storm was led by freshman Tom Michaelsen (Bethpage, NY) who captured six points with three goals and three assists against a strong Hobart defense. Captain Mike McGuire (Arlington, VA) recorded his first hat trick of the year with three goals, while Jack Rosson (Severna Park, MD) and Felix Forbes (Corning, NY) each added two points a piece. Goalie Dave Saccente (Lake Grove, NY) notched 17 saves for the Red Storm.
The Statesmen got out to a quick start, scoring the first two goals of the game at 14:11 and 13:01 by Nate Hill and Daryl Veltman. St. John's answered back, taking control on the ball and responded with three straight goals from Rosson, Forbes and Michaelsen against Hobart goalie Dan Valente, to end the first quarter 3-2.
The two teams exchanged the lead several times in the second quarter with tough defensive plays and unstoppable efforts at the net. St. John's pulled out to a 5-3 lead over the Statesmen before Hill and Chris David fired back to even out the score at 5-5. Michaelsen scored with 3:47 from a feed by Patrick Zeis (St. Louis, MO), but it was answered by a 1:24 Hobart goal to end the first half with a tied score of 6-6.

After the half, Hobart pulled out to a 5-0 run to start the third quarter and dominate the Red Storm defense. After a scoreless quarter, Michaelsen stepped up on a fast break opportunity, scoring at 14:48 to start the fourth period to cut the lead to 11-9. Although the Red Storm out scored the Statesmen, 3-2 with two more goals by McGuire, it was not enough, as Hobart pulled out the win, 13-9.
The Statesmen out shot the Red Storm, 45-32, and held the edge in groundballs, 43-33.
The Red Storm returns to action next Saturday, April 30, for its last game of the season, when they will travel to Newark, DE to take on the University of Delaware. Face-off is set for 7 p.m.
